Good morning C5 Owners,
I would like to ask what brand oil you use. I am running Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30 in my 1999. I use a WIX oil filter. I was told by a mechanic in my area that a good oil to use is the O'Reilly's High Mileage 5W-30. Any thought ? Thanks.
It really does not matter as long aa it is a synthetic. Mobil 1 5-30 (no high mileage or other variants back then) was originally specified for C5's, but the formulation has changed over the years, so it's not the same product as it was back in 1997. I'm currently running Costco's own brand 5-30 synthetic, every bit the equal of the name brands in terms of specification, but much cheaper - no big advertising budget to pay for. They are also my source for Top Tier gas. I also use Wix/NAPA Gold (same thing, even the same numbering system) filters. Never had a problem with them.
You can run Walmart Synthetic oil and you will be just fine. It really doesn't matter.
Changing it on a regular basis is far more important than what brand it is.
Currently running Edge 10w30 for no particular reason other than my brain likes it.
^^^^^^THIS is TRUTH!! ^^^^^ Keeping fresher oil inside an engine is far more important than the brand name. Probably the worst synthetic oil available today is 3 times better than the best oil available 40 years ago. I'd buy an engine that's always had frequent, and fresh, non top name synthetic oil changes, before I'd consider one that's always run Mobil 1, and only changed every 15,000-20,000 miles. My .02

Castrol Edge, Valvoline, Mobil One, as long as it is full synthetic and meets the specs and shows GM Dexos1 on the container. O'Reilly 5W-30 Full Synthetic is fine if it states GM Dexos1 on the container.
I usually buy whichever is on sale around $22-$25 for a 5-quart jug (LS2) and have a 6 pack of quarts form Costco usually on sale for under $30 and I use ACDelco filters or Purolator PureOne. I use Mobil One if available otherwise Valvoline or Castrol Edge.
Amsoil oil and filters are great, but I am not paying $16 per quart and $18 per filter for it.
I have always used Mobile one full synthetic and have used ac Delco or mobile one, purolator filter, first ever oil change used a fram oil filter then heard they were not as good, that was 2003.
Cheaper oil is probably fine but the price of Mobile One oil is usually $10.00 max for oil change vs Walmart super tech brand, $10.00 is not that much $$.
Before the merger with Mann+Hummel, Wix oil filters were made in the US. But after the merger, they are now being made outside the US. Wix oil filters are manufactured in Mann+Hummel’s facilities located in the following countries:
China
Canada
Poland Brazil
Mexico
Ukraine
Venezuela
However, the company, Mann+Hummel hints that “some” Wix products are still being made in North Carolina, USA. However, although Wix oil filters are now mostly made outside the US, they are still well-built and high-quality as they used to be. So, you can still buy them with great confidence.
Mann+Hummel is a global leading manufacturer of filtration equipment. The company uses state-of-the-art equipment in its facilities worldwide.

Note: Mann+Hummel also owns Purolator, another top quality line of filters.

^^^^^^^ This is the real truth. I watched a review of filters from a reputable source with comprehensive test, albeit air filters, and Wix provided the best filtration compared to many popular brands.
So I’m doing first ever oil change on my gf’s 2018 Kia Soul, she got it new and was getting oil changed at dealer, it was usually $45.00 and included a car wash, last time it was $95.00 and I saw receipt and told her I’ll do it now.
Went to Walmart and was going to use super tech oil, but it was only about $3.50 more for 5 qt jug of mobile one full synthetic $29.99, super tech full synthetic 5 qt was $26.50, out of mobile one oil filters, their filter lookup tool didn’t list K and N oil filters but they sell them, used google and got K & N filter for $10.97.
The super tech oil filter for her car would have been $3.48.
It is my understanding that O'Reilly's house brand full synthetic is made by Mobil One. The packaging is even the same color silver, I am sure that means something, lol.
