Default No More Emissions!

Proud of my girl. She just passed her final emissions test EVER to be required under the Connecticut law. She is now forever exempt.

Four more years before the Z06 likewise passes the same hurdle. Think she'll pass the sniffer with a 402, PRCs, Jam Cam and 14psi? I'm certain she will.

You sound pretty confident that the Z06 will be done within the next 4 years... lol

In Ohio I was able to apply for a "Collector" plate, different from a historical plate which is based on age, that means I no longer need to do emissions testing. It was only like $10 more per year than regular plates.

I hate emissions testing.... Only a few counties in Ohio still do it.

Nice to get that hurdle out of the way. Makes me glad we do not have any emissions testing here where I live.

It used to be an actual sniffer test where they would run the car up to 45mph or so with sensors behind the exhaust. That was actually harder to pass and such things as knowing where to go or who to leave a $20 on the seat for made a difference.

Then they put cameras in and that option ended which was smart on the part of the state until they then "got with the times" so the modern emissions test consists solely of plugging into the OBD2 to read if all the tests in the ECU have been checked off and to verify you don't have a check engine light. And let me tell you...... that is SOOOO much easier to pass now. You don't even need to disable the tests to pass so you can stay legal with it even from a tuner's perspective.

I'll raise you one better then that. Our state got rid of the whole entire system all together.

Two reasons. The main one is emissions testing did it's job and forced not only better technology, but also forced people to get used to driving newer more modern cars over the last 25 years. Therefore it is very rare for anyone to be driving around in what is considered a gross polluter anymore.

The second reason is that it was run by an out of state third party contractor that was just raking in the money for themselves and doing nothing but COSTING the state money. Brilliant.

Kind of shocking for a pure blue utopia state that has become the new Nor Cal to do away with it.

To the states credit, when OBDII came out it turned into a run what you brung as long as it passes scenario. No visuals. Just had to have all but one rediness monitor set, of course no check engine light and you passed. So in other words you could have a pretty heavily modified car and still pass emissions. It was kind of a hot rodders dream.

OBDI was much more of a pain in the ***.

Congratulations. I remember that feeling when I lived in N.J. Now live in Florida, no inspections of any kind.

That's a great feeling. I had to get collector insurance on mine when I lived in Arizona. Since I moved to Tennessee, and now to Nebraska, I don't have to deal with any Inspections anymore either.

I went the Collector plate route in Ohio as well so I could avoid the last couple of E-Checks on my '99 FRC and the '90 RX7 before that - no way in Hell that car would have pasted the tail pipe sniffer test!

It has to be 30 years old to get collector plates in NorCal AKA Washington.

In Ohio the Historical plate is for 25+ year old cars and comes with lots of restrictions.

The Collector plate is for special vehicles. All Corvettes are on the list, but if you have a car not on the list you have to show $5000 worth of mods to make it special and then they MAY approve your application.

Plus in Ohio you also have to have another vehicle registered as you primary or daily driver for the Corvette to get collector plates.

I suppose the whole emissions started out with like most, Good intentions, but at my age there is one thing I have learned, Giving the government a job with "Good intentions" it goes right to hell in no time. Back in the nineties across the river in New jersey, ol ' Christy Todd Whitman decided to go all in on a Federal government statewide emissions program, but enough states like PA 's Governor Tom Ridge said "Ah, don't think we're going that way, we'll handle our own !" The fed said they would file suit, but enough east coast states said, "We're with Tom !" and we'll go our own way." And I was lucky enough to have a few minutes with Governor Ridge, and I used my own 1979 Corvette story and I explained that letting someone 300 miles away dictate what were and is a minor problem is, I don't know anyone who owns a corvette or any truly powerful car who doesn't want the car and the air to get along. but making a 'one-size' fits all program is just looking for a truck load or problems. He agreed, Gov. Whitman didn't and she not only decided on the federal emissions program, but she went one step further and fired the WHOLENJ Dept of transportation, and all of it's state wide inspection stations and hired a out of state company from AZ I think, who took the MONEY and set up state inspection stations hired truly young minimum-wage people who knew NOTHING about car or trucks to run the emissions and it took a few years, but it ended up[ where you might think it got, after 1.000's of complaints and quite a few lawsuits, it was disbanded by the next administration because it didn't work and nothing was getting fixed. but all of those good state employees got the short end of the stick. I have a friend who lives in NJ with his 66 yellow corvette roadster and hasn't had it inspected in years, he does it himself as far as safety, but he said "I'm not letting some 19 year old get in my car and put on a dynamometer to try to gauge it's emissions, I'm not doing that !" and he drove for years with a full exception of and in many case getting stopped for no emissions sticker and he just tell the cop, "Just write me the ticket officer ! " never got excited, the cost of the ticket was just the cost of a sunday drive. New Jersey has since come to terms with the safety and emission requirements, but thanks to ol Christy Whitman, it went all to hell in a handbag. All she had to do is say [b]"NO" with the other 8 states. Both Nj and PA have had revisions to antique, collectable and other tag programs that reflect that no matter how many Corvettes or other 1960's or 1970's 1980' cars, none of them amount to any level of pollution that inflicts problems for the population, how many 1969 455 Olds Cutlass's or corvettes or Mustangs are running around on any given day? Not that many !

I was very surprised when visiting Florida that there were no inspections at all. There's a up side and a down side to this as I saw numerous ratty cars on the road that probably needed work... maintenance wise and otherwise... Most of us keep our cars in perfect, safe condition but for other DD I think inspections are a good thing...

Yeah, lots of ratty cars, no inspections, hurricanes...

Better to stay in Pa. Pass the word.
