just finished fixing the seat rocking problem. i noticed under the seat foam that a couple of the wires were broken that were under the seat foam. they are the wires that dig into the seat foam and not any electric wires. i see a lot of seat repair kits on the market but not any that address the broken support wires. any ideas before i try my own ideas. thanks Denny
I'd suggest hitting up one of the used part vendors, such as vettenuts or dino's. I imagine they have or get seats that are basically only good as parts donors.
That said, way back in the military we had beds that were just wires and springs with a 3" mattress. Horribly soft. Used safety wire and safety wire pliers to re-string the frame, much like a tennis racket, under the mattress. Significant improvement. Stainless wire available on Amazon, pliers at Harbor Freight. Just a thought.
thanks for the reply. i'm gonna look at my options this winter. good covers and foam (about 600.00) then someone to cover them (???). i'm also easy to satisfy when it comes to the c5 seats. mine just turned 50k but it's 25 years old and the seats could look much better if covered or replaced. been looking at amazon, ridies, and a couple others.watched a couple video's on the amazon seats and they look pretty good. it's been about 2 below here so i have the rest of the winter to pull the trigger. i could do without all the seat functions. put the seat where i want it and thats good enough for me. thanks again. Denny
Here's a vote for Ridies. I installed them myself. Much better quality than OEM. (They don't claim to match OEM colors, but you can get sample swatches and choose from them. I picked sandstone for my 50th Anniversary Edition, and I'm happy with the color)
I know the C5 seats don’t get much love compared to the later generation seats, but you can improve them by rebuilding them with jute padding to cover the exposed seat wires and other sharp edges. Add new, better than OEM seat foam, and better real leather seat skins and they will feel better than new.
I went with Top Flight Automotive (Corvette America) 100% leather seat skins because they are one of the few manufactures who maintained the GM licensing to offer the C5 logo and Corvette lettering. That may not matter to everyone, but I like that extra detail plus my auto upholsterer also recommended them due to the quality and fit as he installed other brands as well.
I bought some piano music wire the same diameter as the car from ebay and used a pliers to bend into shape, I don't recall the diameter size but it was easy, low cost and worked great.
thanks for the reply fast one. got the black with red amazon seats installed yesterday. install was not bad but very tight. they look great on the torch red c5. i'll keep my original seats and rebuild them in the future. originals were just a little tired looking. new seats will give me a little time to get my originals in order.. thanks again
