Never heard this asked before! I'd guess it is activated when the door is opened, regardless of headlight utilization. I had mine staying on even when the door was closed. When my son was a little boy, he told me that he could see a light on inside it. I didnt give him, or it, much thought.....Until my battery died when it shouldnt have!! Sure enough, I laid sideways in the seat, and the damn light was on! I had to make up a little piece of plastic and super glue the thing to the door. This made contact with the plunger sooner, and problem solved.

Theres a pressure switch that is supposed to turn the light off when the box is closed. If it's still on when the box is closed, get a little rubber foot and stick it to the box lid so that it presses the switch sooner as the door is closed.
Also, switch it to an LED bulb to not draw much current from the battery

OK, that gives me the info I was looking for . Now I have something else for me to fix. I check the plunger switch and the fuse to start with.
I'll report when I have that figured out or I have more questions.
