Default C6 big brake upgrade

Hello to all. After almost 20 years I’m back in C5Z. I am picking up a nicely modded SWZ on Tuesday

there isn’t much to do it that I would have done myself that hasn’t already been done. My only plan was to upgrade the seats which by chance has already happened. I found a mint set out of a C6 carbon edition that are on their way as I type. The seats have “Carbon” embossed on the headrests which planted the ultimate overkill seed

i am kicking around the idea of tying that together with a CCB setup from a C6 ZR1. I know it’s overkill but I’m pretty sure I’d have the only SWZ with carbon ceramics

my question is other than the brake components is there anything else I would need to add/modify to complete this swap. I’m aware of the need to possibly upgrade the knuckles and down the road I might but I’m not overly concerned as I will never track the car or constantly push the brakes to their limit. For those who have added base C6 Z06 brakes is there any upgrade needed to the master cylinder or booster? Anything else that I’m not thinking of that would need to be done to accomplish this crazy project?

thanks

*i have F14s in a 18/19 setup on the way. Forgestar confirmed that they will clear the calipers

Have had these on our C5 for a few years; go on with no problem.
Calipers are a straight bolt on. For the 15 spoke C6 wheels on our car I used a small (6mm) spacer on the front just to ensure clearance between the wheel spokes and caliper.
No change or modifications needed to master cylinder or booster.
Of course that is the perfect time to flush your brake system.
Went to the Doug Rippie stainless steel brake lines.

Thanks for the vote of confidence

Eff it… I’m going to do it!!

just purchased. Four new CC rotors with weights are on their way $5400 all in which is expensive but this will be an epic car once I’m done

Just going to say it.

Why waste your time and money on C6Z non-performance calipers? Or on carbon rotors for street driving? What this is is an appearance mod in effect.

You're already spending more on appearance / rarity mod for the rotors alone vs functionally improving braking to any great degree. Is the car getting an equivalent suspension and handling upgrade?

If you want an uncommon (read: RARE) setup which has immense street credit because it is a huge performance increase and is just as expensive or moreso, kit the car out with an AP Racing brake set. Just use street pads on the street.

Call Randy @ DRM. He'll hook you up.

And welcome back to the C5 fold!

I certainly appreciate you opinion and you make valid points concerning the ROI from the driveability/usefulness of this brake setup. For what I will use this car for (most of the time) CCBs will honestly offer no discernible difference from the stock C5 Z brakes…. If I use this logic even upgrading to a C6 Z06 system is a waste of money for me and most of the non track rats that swap to the newer brakes. Could we not say the same about most who swap cams and other engine mods? 405 HP is more than enough for a street car but many of us enthusiasts seem to be prisoner to the more is better mindset.

I’m moving to an 18/19 setup and I know that I won’t be happy with the smallish look of the stock brakes behind those wheels. From the cars I’ve owned since i moved on from C5s ive gotten used to the look of the aggressive ie. large brake look of those cars so leaving the stock brakes are a nonstarter for me. It was going to cost me 3k to swap to new C6 Z iron. Choosing an AP, Wilwood or other aftermarket iron setup will cost similar money to the CCs but at the end of the day it would be just another C5 with a brake kit.

When my C8Z allocation is pulled and if available I will opt for a Z07 car which would provide the same “why”debate. The brakes, suspension and aero of that car will provide no benefit on the street but most do it because it simply looks cool and provides additional provenance. My last Corvette was a full bolt on C7 Z06 that made 800 crank…. Useful on the street no. Fun for the occasional instance it full potential could be squeezed out….hell yes!

To answer your question concerning suspension mods yes, the car im getting has had some modifications done and perhaps after I get the car and live with it for a while some additional work will be done in that department as well.

I’ve wanted a SW Z since a new one was sold out from underneath me back in 2000. Having a relatively speaking rare car with a unique brake setup will, I think add to the enjoyment of ownership… if it doesn’t it’s not like their value turns to zero the second I mount them and could always sell them at an acceptable loss.

Maybe I should have just said 8 grand is worth it not not have brake dust covered wheels 🤣

Excited to be back in a C5 and active in this section of the forum.

You've got a plan and a set purpose. Better than most here, including myself when I started out with my Z06. Cheers.

SW White Z (right) vs AW FRC (left) ... reeeally tough call there! They make for some of the best looking C5s on the market yet were not a popular color when in production.

A beautiful pair. I’d like to think I was ahead of the curve concerning the white Zs. I was incredibly disappointed when I lost out on the new SW back in the day and even moreso when I learned that I couldn’t get an 02 in white…. I ended up ordering a black/mod red and then a yellow 03. on a side note It was silly that the C5 Zs weren’t available in all available colors at the time they were manufactured.
