So, I took off my intake manifold last night to do a preemptive oil pressure sender replacement and relocation. When I got the manifold off, this is what was waiting for me underneath....YUCK!! I got this car in December, had been in Texas most of its previous life. I think the PO was off-roading it! It's now getting all new top end gaskets!
Good time to get the vacuum out, but it looks like you doing a good job, Id there is anything else you have in mind on the top of the engine, now's the time !

How many miles on the car? If the car has 20k, I'd say your right about being taken off road.. However, if the car has 120k it looks a little normal. Also, where did you buy the car in Texas? If you bought the car in West Texas, you can expect a thin layer of dirt on just about everything.
I bought the car here in Ohio, but the Carfax indicated it was bought in Uvalde TX, and lived there for over 15 years. It only has 66K on it. I thought about changing the intake manifold, but some other expenses got in the way. Oh well, that will give me something to do later.
It really is amazing! Got it all back together and started it this morning, purrs like a kitten! Success!!!All the gaskets and injector O rings were original, Yikes!
That’s probably from spending 15 years in Texas. To answer the other question, it has just over 66,000 miles on it. It was one of those projects that kept on needing more! When I got the coil packs off the valve cover, the covers were an oily mess so there went the valve cover gaskets, and of course the intake and throttle body gaskets went with that. Then, the base of the injectors on the manifold had dried fuel residue, so of course the injector o rings had to go, they were hard little rubber donuts! But all is done.
That's what my 113,000 engine looked like when I pulled my manifold. I got a knock sensor CEL, the front one was submerged in water. A good vacuuming and all is well now. To get the crevices I used a trans fluid funnel stuck to the end of my shop vac, the little end really gets into the head bolt
cavities well.
Those small gaps down to the head bolts are grime magnets!! cdee, your definitely looks worse than mine, although mine only has 67K on it! You went one step farther than I did, I didn't take off the valley pan.
