My turbos sit right alongside the engine block / oil pan and there isn't much clearance between the turbo exhaust housing and the starter. Just thinking a mini-starter would give me more clearance.

It will help but with a turbo I would add a heat shield on the starter to defect heat if it is that close.

I already did that. I'm just trying to create as much of an air gap as possible as well.
