Long story short, someone backed into me tonight at a red light. I am fine, but my front nose and plate cover took the brunt. Police found the other driver at fault. I’ll let my body shop and insurance company figure out the details.
Anyway, what is the estimated going rate for a front bumper re-paint?
Depends if the shop repaints the bumper and plate cover on the car, or takes both off to repaint more like $600 to a $1000.00. I would think you get to chose !
Carefull as a police report and an insurance claim will show up on your ownership record (CarFax) as a vehicle accident. This may effect your ability to get your pricing if/when you go to sell the car in the future.
For less than a grand, you might be able to work a deal with the person who hit you to go direct to the shop without the need for insurance. This then also becomes a "diminished value" claim. Brace for the rodeo as they will want you to go to the lowest price and not the guy who can fix it properly.
Now that the cops are involved, I'm not sure if you can un do that one...
Any LEO out there can chime in on how to keep a slight bumper moosh off the police reports once they are involved?
I would bet at least $1000 to do it right. There could be damage that you can't see as well. Let the shop and the other guy's insurance handle it. If you're concerned with diminished value, you'll likely have to take the guy to court to get that.

It is what it is, I actually just bought this car and the previous owner had an accident on the CarFax, ironically, it was for the same issue, someone backed into them at a stop light.
Anyway, I wanted the police report because if this guy who hit me falls off the face of the earth, then I’m SOL.

Yup, I would think the styrofoam pad under the bumper is damaged. 20 years ago this coming November, a deer walked in front of my car as I was slowing to turn into the driveway. A BIG deer. I was going 30mph at most. In 2003, this was a $6,000+ claim!! To get a top job on that bumper, I'd say OP is looking at $1,300-$1,600. My opinion.
Take a picture of the damage and keep it on file. If / when you sell and someone questions the accident or low ball offers you, you can show them the extent of the damage. No frame damage so the car is still structurally sound.
