I am going to look at my first c5 and am wondering if it has a cd changer, the person selling it for his farther says it only has a cassette player but the options code in the glove compartment showsu1s which is a cd changer.would this mean the cd changer is in the trunk and the owners son has no idea
On my '99, I open the hatchback and there is a carpeted access panel all the way to the rear on the passenger side. I remove the panel and my 12 disc changer is there.
It's in the trunk under the carpet, then lift the two latches and pull the whole panel out.
You can see the bracket where mine used to be mounted. I had to destroy the unit to get my cds out.
If music is important to you then you'll want to upgrade the center bezel to a double din and put in a modern system anyway.
This shows the left latch of the large access panel in the center of the trunk. The other latch is still under the carpet on the right side of the photo. Bracket where 12 disc changer used to be mounted.

They notoriously break, wont eject...they are mounted in that rear center hole not flat but hanging top to bottom. Id love to get mine fixed and there are people in this forum that fix them. I had a local guy quote me $500 and no guarantees it would last. I've also read it can be done for $350 but then must be mounted flat. I've not done anything with mine, neither are good options to me. I put a cheap $19.00 blue tooth adapter in the cigarette lighter and it works great. Some people diwn these cd players as old technology. I have a ton of cd's I like keeping it original and I just like stuff to work. Maybe one day...

Curious so why did you leave the bracket in place?

A much better solution than the original CD changer which only holds a few CD's and won't play MP3's or other formats is to pull it out and replace it with a device called an iSimple which works with an Ipod Touch or other storage device. I have one in my C5, it is about the size of a penny matchbox and plugs into the line between the radio and the Bose amp, with a third line coming off to the Ipod storage device. The original radio thinks this is the CD player now, and it is controllable through the radio buttons that control the original CD changer. I removed the ash tray from my car and hid the Ipod device in that location, easily accessible should you need. My device holds many hundreds of songs . . . .
There are other better solutions than the original CD changer, IMO.

Yes but onky if you don't want the original. It holds 12 disc. For me its not about anything except preserving original. And i have hundreds of CD'S i really dont care to convert. Lol

I'm in your camp. Yes there are a multitude of other newer and better options out there but for me it's about originality.
Laziness
The damn thing would not eject the cartridge so my priority at the time was get the cds out.
I took mine out to see if i could fix it after i pulled the cds out with long nose pliers, lol. Mine are still in mine too, i was just busting ya. But if i ever get it fixed ill put it back in. Hell i never use either of those 3 holes anyway.

I had mine fixed by Dr. Don in Texas... I did have to come up with a horizontal mounting on the flat surface of the trunk. Since have had no issues and it cost me around $350.00. Like some of the other members I like to listen to CD's...
if it does have a remote cd player (and even if it doesn't) PAC makes a plug-in interface that allows you to connect a phone/mp3 player, and the head unit recognizes it as a cd changer, so you can track forward/ back. much better option imo than the janky cd changer. And you get far more music .. and streaming...

I've got a plug in that works fine. Problem is , I like original stuff, I have a million cds and would like to use them in my original 12 disc CD player. All the noise these cars make and allow to come in to the cabin, I can't imagine why I would pay for great audio, with the decibel level from noise half deafening. Seems kind of self defeating lol.

trust me, that stock system is such garbage, even with the top down, you'll notice a huge difference if you upgrade the blows crap.
