I haven't had the now famous column lock problem yet, would it be wise to get one of the kits to remove the problem in the future, if so what and where ?
Although I cannot comment on the 'old school' CLB since I have not installed it, my LMC5 installed in 2015 has worked flawlessly. I did have a problem when first installing it, but it was an installer problem, not the product. Richard at Compliance straighten me out.
If you have a manual, you really need to get an LMC5. Even if you don't install it right away, you can keep it in your glove box to install when you do need it. Just my $0.02.
I got the Doctor Dons column lock simulator. Haven't installed it yet as I have no lock issues but if and when I do I'll be ready. I tried the lmc5 but I was unable to remove my pins from the connector even with a pin removal tool.

That was one of my install issues I had. Richard said to just pull hard and it will come our. And it did.
Thanks all, I got with Compliance Parts, and funny they were the least expensive one I looked at, but now I can do it once it drops dead on me. You never know when one of these systems is going to bit !
After installing the LMC5, that everyone suggested, and the brown wire mod, I'm now dealing with 2 mph fuel shutoffs. Also random pull key, wait 10 second messages. The LMC5 was never fully debugged IMO.
these videos may com in handy - at one point my battery drained too much and the column locked - fortunately it was in the garage - low battery is a commmon reason for the column lock to occur. I installed the lmc5 myself (I'm not handy) and it initially didn't unlock the column - I then called the seller and he suggested checking a fuse in the box on the passenger floor, it was blown, replaced it, turned the ignition key and the lmc5 immedialty did it's job. He stayed on the phone with me the whole time we checked the fuse and replaced it. - why wait until you're stranded someplace - do it now. battery drain is common on C5 unless you drive it nearly every day. I replaced the battery with a slightly bigger battery and shoe horned it in - barely fits - car still needs a battery tender.
I find it rather interesting that people either swear BY the LMC5 or swear AT it...... FWIW, I installed one on my C-5 about 3-4 years ago, and have had no issues with it.
This is a picture of the backside of the C-5's steering column "lock ring". The "cutouts" around the perimeter of the part, are the places where the lock pin can engage, and lock the column. About 18-20 years ago, I purchased a second lock plate, checked it in a lathe, and trimmed off the area where these cutouts are, then installed it on my car.. Between this mod, and the LMC5, I no longer have to be worried about my column locking up.
I have a 2000 auto. It was not locked however I bought the LMC5 to have just in case. Going through papers I found all the things dad had done to the car and one of them was the column lock recall, it was done at a Chevy dealer in Sarasota, should I still install the LMC5 or just keep it in the glovebox?
Geez, I read all of these column lock complaints and comments and just wonder if it's wise to install any one of them in my car. I don't want to create a problem that isn't there. I have an auto '98 that has not had any modification regarding the column locking. No recall, no LMC5 or anything else. The column does lock after I remove the key but always unlocks when reinserted... After 25 years I'm not too worried.

Did you also get the unlocker in case your column will not unlock when it fails?

Yes, Yes I did. I think it was $3-4 and I thought to myself if I did not but the 'unlocker' and I had to wait for a week or so once I needed it, That would be just stupid on my part !

Same here, plus a little problem getting the column unlocked but Richard helped there also.
