Here are some quick pics as I sliced the ebay metal ring out of an oem leather C5 boot to reuse in the new boot intended for the C6 Z06 shifter I'm mounting in the coupe.
Glue of preference is DAP Weldwood contact cement. Well shaken. And some dollar store gator clips to align and hold the leather in place. I've done with eith JF-Customs suede for the Z06 and here is regular black leather for the coupe to roughly match the arm rest I had installed a decade ago.
The finished product looks great. I see one spot I'll want to go back on later to adjust slightly where when you press the boot down into the cavity it rotates inward and exposes the edge near one of the metal prongs, but that's all and it's a minor detail.
Nice job Brett! When I got mine I bought a cheap boot kit off ebay and stole the plastic base from it. It had staples holding the boot on so I used staples on mine, but I like the ring and glue idea better.
The plastic rings sit better to me as far as how the leather sits at the edge of the opening, but they all crack and fail while the metal rings hold a positive spring tension and are easy to work with. And one benefit with the metal ring is that if you take your time you can bend and mold it to perfectly match the console. This one will get that treatment over time.
I bought the metal ring from the ebay seller and also the cheapo shift boot he suggested/recommended. Used CA/super glue as I didn't have contact cement at the time. Well, that shift boot was pretty low quality, didn't have the triangle cutouts already. And my result was horrendous.
So I bought another shift boot, better quality, that has the triangle cutouts. Also invested in contact cement. Haven't invested the time to redoing the shift boot yet, but now with your guide/pictures I'll be more motivated.
