The shift linkage assembly on my C5 A4 decided to break a couple days ago when I was going out to run some errands but luckily it got stuck on Park. Anyway, after replacing the entire assembly and bushings we tried the shifter and it went from Park to 1st without an issue but when we decided to bolt down the shifter and try once more, the cable broke and bent again at the shifter **** end. Could there be an issue with the shifter **** itself? I couldn't seem to find a solution online. I have attached Shift linkage assembly broken twice at this exact point.
an image below, anything helps!
Wow. That’s strange. In my experience, the shifter cable assembly seems pretty much unbreakable but it’s the cheap nylon grommets that disintegrate and fail over time. (Ever hear of aluminum GM?!)
Perhaps putting both the shifter and rear cable setting in neutral before installing the new cable?

It broke at the shifter console area twice, not sure what happened but maybe taking it apart would help?
The plastic end of the shifter side of the cable is fragile and will break if the end is lifted too much as in lifting the shifter out from the console too much or lifting the cable end too much when installing the shifter. Notice in the picture above how small and weak the broken end of the plastic is, it doesn't bend and instead will crack when stressed too much. Just stop lifting when you feel resistance from the cable.

I understand but I find it weird that it was just fine when it was being tested and it broke right when we bolted the shifter back in place. Could the shifter be the problem? Or maybe something inside the cable linkage well where the transmission sits that is catching on to the cable as it does the gear changes?
