Hey, everyone! I am a younger first-time Vette owner with a '99 6-speed. Unfortunately, shortly after getting it, the transmission started showing signs of its age (has slipped once, biting very very late, and makes a pretty bad squeak when the clutch is engaged/disengaged). Don't know exactly what the issue is, could be a plate, the master, the slave, not sure - I don't have much experience in this area so I figure the only way to know how bad it really is involves taking it apart. I changed the clutch fluid a few times to clean it out and that kept it going for a few short drives around town, but then the squeaking started. I haven't been able to drive it hardly at all since getting it and it is killing me to have it just sit in the garage...
I have basically no way to perform any work on it myself, as I am without a lift or many tools, especially with the process of getting to the transmission in the 5th and 6th gen being so involved. I also really don't want to take it to a shop and have it done there and get stuck with a 3k bill - I really can't justify that kind of additional investment into it when I am already out the purchase price, insurance, winter storage, etc, plus no guarantee that this isn't the first in a line of things to go wrong... I love the car and would hate to see it go so soon, but I don't know where to go from here. Any advice? Or if anyone is Wisconsin and willing to help with a fact-finding mission with the means...
Since you appear to be someone not capable to analyze and do repairs yourself, I suggest you contact your local Corvette Club and to get recommendations on local repair facilities that are familiar with C5's. You need a fair analysis on your transmission issue. You may be surprised that the fix is not as costly as you are anticipating.. Hope all goes well so you can enjoy driving your C5.
What you're describing sounds like clutch issues to me, not a transmission problem. But you need a professional, trustworthy diagnosis. Local corvette club can give good advice, I'd start with them.
