I recently bought a 2001 base model 6 speed manual and would like to know the purpose of the blocked off inlets left and right of the license plate cover. I thought these 2 inlets were open like the brake cool. Inlets are. Can I remove these for better cooling or should they stay in for a engineering reason. I wanted to remove the plastic covers and install screen in them Thanks

If you want to install something like the Z06 screens in that area, no harm in doing so. I did that on my ‘00 and ‘03 coupes and just left the solid plastic piece in place behind the screens.
Some owners have drilled holes in the plastic pieces to allow more air to pass through but I am not sure it really adds any benefit.
