They need that power to move all that mass around. Friend has a Ram with the big 6.4L in it, a lot more power than my 2000 C5 rated at a lowly 345hp, yet I can drop him like a bag of dirt in any speed contest.

Yes it is not how much you have but what you can do with it.
My truck ha a ton of power but is 4500 pounds and mid size.
My neighbor has an $80k BMW M3 with the 3.0 twin turbo 6 and manual transmission. Car and Driver recorded a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds. The 20+ year old C5Z with its “laughable” 405hp is just .1 seconds slower. I guess BMW makes nice interiors so that’s something, but even then you’d have to like the angry beaver looking front end.
Tire and controls technology has come a long way in 20 or 30 years. It used to be 300 HP would kill you. Then 400. Then 500. Now any number does not matter because cars are smart enough to handle any meat servo inside.
Yep the weight of vehicles has been going up every year. Hence more power needed to beat the previous models performance. C8 has lots of power and its fast but with that weight seems more a GT type car then a sports car. Also just looks bid to me.

Well, seeing the last three generations of the Z06 variant literally destroy the C5 Z06 in everything. With the exception of the C6 Z06 being a lighter car than the C5 Z06. The later models are a few hundred pounds heavier…yet the power, performance, track capabilities, and creature comforts are all considerably better in the C6 Z06 on up. And much more drastic in the C7 and C8. The new ZR1 is 1064hp and 828lb-ft for goodness sakes. Just shy of 3 times the amount of C5 Z06 horsepower and more than double the torque. Say that out loud to yourself. It’s pretty profound.
I’m a huge C5 fan having owned 3 of them and still own the first one I bought brand new. So it’s not like I’m hating on them. My C5 makes 648rwhp/568rwtq and it’s still no match for the C8 Z06 or ZR1 in anything other than getting groceries. I’m just being logical and realistic.
So again….405 hp is laughable. Especially at the crank.
Ya - C8's are impressive! Unfortunately I cant justify the cost to buy a new one and I read a lot about people not wanting to own one out of warranty. And I'd really be in the doghouse if that DCT tranny took a crap on me. And of course it would lol. Just getting to be way to tech and complex for me to own one I'm afraid. And who knows what the repairs will be on the electric one, oh boy. But if you play in that league their cool.

The C5 Z06 (2002-2004) is still a very competent car, but others are right that there are a number of cars anymore that have just as impressive HP and performance numbers.

That has more to do with tires and traction than anything. The AWD version of that car is significantly faster off the line. Its especially true if you're not on a prepared surface. Still they are almost identical power to weight ratio. Most of modern power has gone to dealing with heavier and heavier cars.
I remember the Lingenfelter C5 builds from the early 2000's. Staggeringly fast for the time, mid 3 sec 0-60 and 1/4 deep in the 11's. Basically nothing else that fast then, esp. at the price, which was still 'almost' cheap.
