I have owned my car for a little over 3 months and have put 5500 miles on it.....and it is NOT my daily driver.
Holy Smokes!! That is a LOT of "fun driving"! Are you like Forest Gump.....decided to go for a drive one day and never came back? :D
I did a bunch of day rides last fall when the air was nice.....pick a destination for no particular reason.....drive there....and drive back. But 5500 miles in 3 months? You da man!
Well wth 5 vehicles and a diesel tractor, I don't like to be changing oil all the time. The two astro vans have over 200K miles on each and a steady diet of Mobil1 the whole time. the PT is one year old now with 36K miles and Mobil 1 The vette has 12K miles on it, oil changed at 4000 and am still on the second oil change. The tractor gets changed once a year weather it needs it or not. I change all the other vehicles at 10 - 12 K miles and the filter. I figure if over 200K and changes done at 10-12K works why waste the GOOD OIL? :flag :auto:
I find it amazing at all the "3000 mile" oil changers misinformation. As many have stated here, 3k oil changes were for older style engines with dino oil, not synthetics. But even with dino oil you can go a bit longer between changes. I owned a V6 truck and always changed its oil every 7500 miles, with dino oil. Same filter between changes. I had the truck since it was new and it had 165,000 miles on it before I sold it. It NEVER once had an oil related engine problem. Maybe I was lucky, maybe not.
The thing is, do whatever your owners manual suggests. That way you are covered during your warranty.
On my '01 Z06 I used to burn a quart of oil every time I took it to the track. so given that, if I went to the track once a month, I should NEVER have had to change my oil at all since all of my oil would have been new on a 7 month cycle. I could have just changed the filter once a year. Wow... why ever did I get rid of that car, it would have saved me a fortune!!!
