Are they replaceable?... Is it possible to get a working unit off a wreck and just... "plug it in" and carry on with life in a working C5?
Why not?
totally replaceable, and very straightforward and easy to do. These units don't really die that often , contrary to popular (mis)belief, so used ones, if bought from someone reputable, shouldn't be an issue. Search the for sale forums here, they come up fairly regularly,. But yeah, you are going to pay --- part from any other car likel costs a few hundred at most, for us, they're running around $1,200.
I would avoid ebay -- there's WAY to many scammers for this part. Buy from a reputable dealer. I bought several a while back from a small team that raced c5s, one of the first things they did when race prepping was ripping out the ebcm.. should have bought a few more :-)
With any used parts and any electrical parts you only deal with those who have returns.
With electronics they work or they don't. GM cars of this era have various issues with electronics. So rare or not they can and do happen so protect yourself with a return policy.

obviously if the choice was between a warrantied part and a non warrantied part we'd all go the route of getting the part with a warranty. On this issue it's a moot point, since you're unlikely to get this particular 24-year-old part with a return policy.

First not everyone considers this.
Second some places will give you 30 days etc. They do not test and if is junk out of the box they will take back.
Hmm first one on EBay I found has 3 month warranty. Warranties are not all that rare if you look.

yeah, good luck on ebay.
In my experience you're better off in a private sale with a reputable seller, but if you'd prefer an anonymous sale with people on ebay, to each their own. Regardless, op solved his own problem. We can close this side conversation.

Many places are well know salvage yards and recyclers like J&J Auto wrecking.
It just takes sone common sense to know what to look for.
Weak car batteries will bring up service active handling etc codes.
every 27 to 36 months I’d get that code on a corvette I used to own. My corvette tech who does the service seminars told me not to worry just replace the cars battery. Sure enough the DIC warn8ng codes would go away.
to the original poster if the codes come back. Look at buying a new car battery and my tech recommended the AC delco unit.
these cars are very voltage sensitive so should that abs code come back down the road…my suggestion is change the cars battery first before anything else.
a new car battery when it reappears may solve your abs or service active handling code…(as crazy as it sounds)

To that point-- also check the grounds. There are several specific ground points in the c5 (I think 3?) and they are notorious for becoming corroded / caked with debris. Many , many random codes and electrical gremlins turned out to be faulty ground points, bad battery, or both.
I am the lucky one. I have been thru 3 Ecbm. Your best bet is to shop all over
the states. I have a lot of luck with drag racers. We dont like this electronic
device.
Good luck.
Actually you do realize J&J has a Major EBay presence
... Mic Drop!
Wow. Really torturing the logic today!
I never said reputable resellers can't be on ebay. If they are reputable, no problem with an ebay presence..
because..
wait for it...
you already know they're reputable.
I seriously can't believe you're arguing this point. But if you want to "drop a mic" on such an inane argument, be my guest. You'd be the only one in the house clapping.
By the way.. the OP has long since passed your tormented logic. You want to use ebay, with unknown resellers, be my guest. You want to use them with reputable vendors, even better. Free country. Time to move on.

Same, I was able to source a bunch from a local race club a while back for cheap-- one of the first things they did was rip them out completely. never needed to crack that box open, still have all of them, neither me or my local c5 friends has ever needed one.
