Some of the 2001 Z06's were plagued with excessive oil consumption but the majority of them were probably corrected, under warranty. Another obvious minus, to some people, is the fact they were only rated at 385hp vs 405hp for the 2002-later cars. However, GM only produced 352 C5Z's in Speedway White, that year only. Those cars are very desirable and hold their value well.

If you give me the choice between +20 horses or a white car I’ll jump on the hp and I love my black 03
I've had both an '01 and an '03. Of course the 405 is more desirable, but I never had any problems with my 2001. Both were great cars and very fun to drive.
SW white for the win, if you can find one. If 385hp is not enough, your mechanically inclined, TSP CNC ported heads (or their Brawler heads) and an TSP low lift "Truck Cam Kit" (beehive springs) will get you way over that 385 rating that came from the factory, and be reliable with a good tune. SW is one of the best colors...
‘01’s may not be as desirable, so you know what? That makes them cheaper. I wanted an ‘04 until my ‘01 popped up at a fantastic price. I’ll add a cam later if I want the 20hp.

A set of 1.8, or 1.85 ratio rockers will make the '01 cam as good as, or better than, the later 405hp cam. Get the later air filter housing, the rockers, and a good tune, and you'll easily be over 405hp....

How would the 1:8 rockers work on a mild LS1? Could you keep the stock springs?
01 Z are not bad car but they are the least desirable of them, search google and you’ll find why.
I don't totally agree. The '01 Zs also had the Alcoa forged aluminum wheels, which are highly sought after in the marketplace. That 20 hp can easily be evened out, and exceeded, for around $1,000....

AFAIK, all model years would be fine as is. EXCEPT the 2000 models. The 2000 models would need different springs. The 2000 model is an outlier in that it had the highest lift factory cam (.500") of all model years base C5s. You'll damage the engine if you keep the stock springs in a 2000 model combined with 1.8s.....

Uhhhh, I have a 03Z with BTR stage 2 cam, speed density no MAF, ported Dorman LS2 intake, ported LS2 TB, LS7 air bridge/filter and full exhaust making 393/365 on a Mustang Dyno....
Mustang Dyno vs DynoJet aside, I don't see 405 at the wheels with only rockers/air bridge and tune...
