I just read somewhere that the Z06 can reach 185 MPH STOCK, does anybody know if this is true?? I know Chevy calls out 171 MPH on their website..
I don't believe that this is true. I'll let you know after I get my engine broken in. :D I'm not quite stock anymore though. Got a Blackwing, an airbridge, and soon to have Borla Stingers. :steering:
Yeah, I read it in the Nescape website, they did this article about a week ago about the top 10 fastest cars, and the Z06 was rated at 185 mph. I'm trying to find the article...I doubt they are right, but it would be sweet to know it can reach that speed. I know Corvette has a history of hiding things like that, like the 600+ hp vettes in the 60's...
Does anybody know how fast it could go if 6th gear was different (i.e. not so tall)? It probably has enough power to pull at least 185 if 6th was shorter.
:iagree: The Z06 def. has the P/W ratio needed to reach higher speeds. A diablo (not a vt 6.0, just a vt) has a top speed of 202mph and has a similar P/W ratio.....
The top pic is :bs , that was taken when the car was started and the guages sweep. You can tell cause all the dummy lights are on. The smaller pic taken at night looks real though. Only lite on is the high beam indicator. Good to see someone with *****.
Hey Monica, how have you been? Might be back down your way soon...maybe I'll stop by.
I can't vouch for the top pic. Like I said, it came from that speedo site. But the second pic is for really. Couple of good old boys who grew up on a farm in south GA. They're nuts & they send me crazy pics & video like that all the time!
I was going to say that myself! I call :bs . Unless you have completely lost your mind (or are on a 10-20 mile straightaway in the Nevada desert), you have more important things to worry about above 150 mph than taking a photo of the speedo.
As for the top speed of the Z06, the power to weight ratio has almost no impact on top speed. Top speed is a function of rear wheel horsepower, coefficient of drag (cd) and aerodynamic cross section. The Lambos that go 200 mph have about a 100 hp advantage over the stock Z06.
As for the Z06, it pulls very hard through 4th (to around 142 mph) but starts to really slow at 150 mph in 5th. Depending on weather conditions and on the position of the headlights assembly (open VS closed), it sometimes will pull well past 160 mph (presumably to 171 mph) and sometimes will start to really struggle around 160 (you will need a HUGE amount of space to come close to 170 mph with the headlights on in a stock Z06). Also, above 145 mph with the headlight open, the front end starts to get a little light. I assume lowering the car and switching to C5R style fixed headlight covers would help (as well as the 150-170 mph).
The only other thing I will add is that, as much as I hate to admit it, the ZR1 is a better car at speeds in excess of 130 mph. It doesn't really pull any harder but feels quite a bit more stable at very high speeds (in the firm suspension mode).

:iagree: I'll throw in some real world runs, in amongst the trick photog. and what not. My friend urpow ran his 02 Z06 with my 91 ZR-1 from 55 and we were dead locked until ~176, when his limiter kicked in and I pulled a few more mph. The cars couldn't have been closer if we had tied them together. Also, he told me his car felt ok at that speed. Mine felt better than ok, I changed lanes twice and she was rock steady. All that weight comes in handy sometimes ;) Not on the strip though. His car would eat me alive in the 1/4
well when I took my Z06 and had it dynoed I had the guy do a top speed run on the dyno.. The car pulled 356 hp at the rear wheels
my car pulled to 181 mph and that was it, The dyno shut down the run...
now if the dyno had been calibrated to shut down at a higher speed im sure it would have gone higher just because there was no air resistance.. but I know the car can support that speed.
Can't be done with a stock Z..Unless you had a long 3 mile hill to desend...I do plan on doing a top speed run with mine this year,i think in 6th, with the blower, i should hit 190, but, thats bench racing..Will post my results...
