I am wanting to do a double din on my 98.
I want to retain the cup holder, cover not needed.
Searching around I am trying to determine which bezel has the oem color and texture along with cup holder. I see the Metra often but seems to be a painted smooth and the VetNuts more oem like but crazy expensive. Anyone have suggestions appreciated.
Also on a Panel I would ideally like to still have access to CD’s whether single or my changer.
Seems only the $1000 plus units do that. Anyone else know of alternatives?
Last any opinions on Bose adapters, I am fine leaving the oem system in place as is.
Thanks for any suggestions and experiences.
Tom
If I were you I would research in the audio section of this forum. Tons of information and existing threads to answer all your questions, good luck whichever direction you go with your car.
That Amazon one above looks like a great deal and you can use LPV-interior paint to change the color. I ordered mine in shale from VetteNuts but color was too brown, so I repainted it for a dead-on match, VetteNuts leaves you with the cupholder and caddy-door as well..
The VetNuts bezel is around $330 now and I guess if I want to keep access to my CD’s I may be looking at close to $1000 for a head unit, add the needed adapter and antenna and the parts alone may well exceed 1500. I’d prefer to not skimp on a bezel that might bug me each time I look at it not blending with the rest of dash and same with a head unit that after all that work doesn’t do all I would like so now the question is a 27 yr old mostly now garage queen worth the investment and effort.
Decisions decisions.
Am still hoping somebody out there has some experience with head units that fit well or don’t f and live up to expectations since there seem to be numerous of all screen sizes, brands, functionality and seemingly quality.
Thanks all.
A good Best Buy store has been installing these for years on C5’s. According to my knowledge, you buy there parts, they do free installs. Take your car to a Best Buy store, they will order everything you need including the bezel. It will probably be a metra bezel, and if you want to paint it when there done, the bezel comes out easily.
IMO, just look in front of you when you’re driving, don’t worry what the fricken bezel looks like.
Best Buy did mine about 7 years ago now, great investment along with the dual cup holder that slides underneath the dash piece, by the passenger side footwell. It now holds a dunkin coffee when I put my right foot through the floor.
With CDs apparently a done for technology, you might consider looking for good condition used. My Kenwood was obtained second hand for a very good price, and shows no harm from the previous installation. It’s quite possible to get most of the more recent features and applications and still maintain reliability.
I thought I needed a cd player when I installed a double din too. I have not used it since I put it in, wireless Android works great with a free Pandora account. If I'm traveling I may use a cd if I were to get in an area with no service.

I used the Vettenuts version.
A really valid point. My Kenwood plays both CDs and DVDs in addition to MP3s and SiriusXM. I have a CD in the slot, but do not recall the last time I played it, and have never contemplated a DVD in the car. When I buy music I buy it in MP3 format, save it on a thumb drive and play it from there.
Personal experience here. I first went with the Metra for about 2 years and then just didnt like it because it didnt match the interior. Ended up getting the Vettenuts bezel and I am VERY happy with it. The texture looks OEM. I ended up having to spend a little more to get the HVAC lined up right and around my Kenwood, but well worth it.
If you can live without a CD player, here's a 1.5 DIN solution that is only ~400 ish buck and you use your stock bezel, and they have the bose adapters and antenna stuff too.
