I’m not sure which forum to post this on…. But my question is this: I have a 61 Corvette with C4 suspension, C5 spindles and front brakes.
The car hasn’t been driven in over three years - and when I took it out the other day - it pulled to the right. I put it back on the lift and raised both
front wheels. The right one was dragging and wouldn’t turn as easily as the driver side.
So, I’m wondering if draining all the brake fluid and re-bleeding the brakes would break loose the caliper?
OR.. Should I pull them both and re-build them with new seals?
I'm not sure where you live, but in my climate/region, brake pads and/or caliper slider pins frequently bind in the caliper brackets, causing resistance and drag on the brakes. A quick cleaning and lubrication of the pins, brackets, and brake pads might do the trick. Generally speaking, it's rarely a hydraulic issue. It's also way less invasive than opening up the hydraulics, and you can test the caliper pistons while you are there to see if they can retract.
Wow… that is great. I’ll purchase the anti seize and silicone paste. I may already have some Brake cleaner.
Great ideas. I’ll compress the caliper pistons to make sure they are aren’t binding. (I don’t think they are the problem)
The only time this car has even been wet or a bit dusty is when I wash it. No rain….
That's a pretty good general purpose, DD type of video but since you are having a problem AND the car has been sitting for a few years a good complete reservoir fluid change and thorough bleeding would be a good idea. I bleed my track Z06 on a regular basis and it is very easy. I also lube the slider pins and pad/clip contact areas with the Permatex lube I got from Napa. Hopefully you don't have a piston that's hanging up or some other unique "retrofit" problem. Beautiful vintage Vette you have!
I hope you resolve your brake issues soon. I'm curious about your car, it looks great! Is that an original body or is the car something that was built from the ground up? If you have time please explain how it was done.
Body is original - replaced the front clip - lots of body work. Original seats - still have the original frame with suspension. Everything is corvette -
I did all the body work and paint and installed the LS6 and 4L60 trans with computer. C4 suspension, C5 brakes
