Probably need a window regulator assembly. Not a big deal to change out.
yea I've done em on other vehicles but this sounds like it's gettin a signal to do what im askin, (roll down) power locks work too. Would I still hear something if it was the regulator?
Yes, you would hear noises if the motor for the regulator was attempting to move. It sounds like a bad window regulator motor from your description. Only way to be sure is pull the door panel and check for signals at the motor.
If you are pretty good with electrical and mechanical, you can remove the regulator and motor and then clean the motor. The dust accumulates from the brushes and then causes dead spots. There are some posts that show (for the most part) how to do it. I did mine over 10 years ago and never had a problem since.
While banging can sometimes temporarily work, you will need to replace the regulator. I had to replace the driver side once and the passenger side twice on my last C5.
Now that you have it working again, cycle the window once-in-awhile. I did the "bang method" about 11 years ago and the window still works today. I use a window valet to open my windows in the summer when approaching the car. It does two things; 1) lets the hot air out of the car for better cooling. 2) cycles the windows.
