I hope the camera survived. Cops can arrest him or her based on the video footage. And possibly suspend there drivers license based on how fast they we’re going. Sorry, I have no respect for that kind of speed on public roads, it could have been worse.
So,,any time you get hard into the throttle, you're on a racetrack? Sorry, not buying that BS.

2nd gear speed? Looks like 65mph lol
I'm sure he's gone much faster before... But there's nothing to show this in the video provided.
While I agree with the OP about safety inspections, it's pretty hard to tell when an impending explosion is going to occur. Sounds like the trans failed catastrophically, which caused the engine to over rev, which then caused the engine to fail catastrophically. I do know that when you're near the redline and the engine is at WOT, if something happens that causes the engine to free rev, the safety net many think they have with the factory rev limiter doesn't exist. The OEM rev limiter cuts fuel, not spark. It simply cannot react quick enough to save an engine under these circumstances. They can't cut the spark, because it will shorten the life of the cats by dumping raw fuel into them. It happened to me once. Lucky all it did was break a lifter and bend the pushrods. This could've been a lot worse! I'm amazed nobody hit the oil slick that had to be present, and cause another instant wreck. This could've been a multiple tragedy....

Hell of a statement from a guy with the screen name "Beast". Should change it to kitten.
That wasn't even fast. I take it you're one of them who keeps the car stock, 2500RPM at most, doesn't run yellow lights and the whitest New Balances ever.
@Beast - You bring a lot of good info to the forum. You're a good veteran member and respected. The repetitive virtue signaling posts though - I have seen several just this week from you - its like getting on a Jet Blue flight wearing a BK hat.
As for the owner, Lorenzo Garcia, yes it was the transmission which let go. He heard 1.5 seconds of grinding from the 4L60E before a single loud sound like slapping wrenches together with a bang and then he saw the flames from the mirror and got to the curb. I don't have information on the flame source or damage yet. It could have been the ATF fluid cooking, or fuel. I don't know. A bad day, but one he walked away from.
I enjoy how the C7 in the video sees the flame and is just like.... bye felicia!
I'm leaning toward gasoline instantly igniting when something inside the Transmission case came through the case and cut the fuel lines. Oil could be hot but it takes a lot to get oil to ignite, that was instant ignition and that's something gasoline does. Way lower flashpoint.
Either way definitely unexpected and the guy controlled it the best he could making it out uninjured. That's the goal in the end of the day.

Sorry about the bad comments guys, I was just having a bad day. My apologies.
That one was lugged while going uphill I thought. Never a fun day. =(
My last two KIAs were both quiet. The Z06 at a stop light was warm and idling without issue before a metal noise and my hand hit the key like a mongoose on a cobra. It didn't help anything though. The prior one was my first engine swap using a donor LT1. I was a rookie at the time but there had been no outward sign for me to pick up on of any issue. Driving it like normal, it did putter power lightly, but only a mile from home I figured it would get home. No strange noises. Oil pressure fine. It died without fanfare. Just one mold buck and the engine went dead. I pulled over and looked to see a giant pool of oil. One of the rods had let go at both ends and got between the next rod and the block to be used as a hammer and aerate the block. It was at least an interesting forensic examination.
Very scary to see that type of immediate catastrophic damage as a result of a blown up trans. As the owner of a cammed and supercharged LS3 transplant pushing 650+ HP to the rear wheels, I know my stock 4L60E is on borrowed time and hope when it does fail, it's not that violent. I don't drag race or do pulls from a dead stop, however I do enjoy a nice long on-ramp from time to time. @Mr. Black Wow those pics!
No, you were right.Lane changes where he's over the line while still next to the other cars.Link works despite the message. https://www.instagram.com/p/DQ3C5vmEYNg/
Yea, like 6" to 1ft over the line as he was infront of that other vehicle and then coming over.
Let's not talk about this ******* in the truck that when the car looked like a meteor on the highway had plenty of time to move over into the center lane and give the guy room to get out of the car that was on fire. Screenshot for those who are visually imparied.
Plenty of time for that truck to move over into the center lane but it's the guy with the Corvette who's at fault eh?
You prudes need to loosen your jorts or sell your car since you don't know what it is to crack the Throttle and enjoy it.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
