The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
BTW there is a HUGE difference between the Mercdes E55 and the BMW M5. Although the new E55 has 470 hp it is a perfromance pig compared to the M5. Stock for stock the only advantage to the Merc is in a straight line and the advantage is not very great. The M5 does not feel like a 4 door sedan. I only really feel like I am driving a sedan when I look back over my shoulder and see the rear seats :D :D :D

I drive the M5 every day-the Z06 has 6k miles, mostly track miles. It is unfair, but flattering to compare a four door 4000+ lb. car against a purpose built 385-405 HP sports car.
However, I love both cars, and have educated many either on the interstate, or on the track. The M5 is much more refined & quiet, until you unleash 394 HP. The M5's brakes are incredible! 17k miles, some track events on the original pads/rotors! The motor seems to run better after 10k miles. Besides-what else can you drive that will scare the hell out of four other adults at 100+ MPH?
The Z06 (modded) is much more violent during acceleration and is absolutely glued to the track. You guys know all about the Z06 and why we love it.
Bottom line is best of both worlds.
I just did :yesnod: I have black and blue interior, but it scared me for a minute.
Here are some MT opinions:
First Drive: 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
When a 302-horsepower sport sedan isn't enough

Besides the proliferation of sport/utilities, the brave, new millennium will be marked by a horsepower war as contentious as the storied '60s. Unlike the big guns of yesteryear, previously unimagined (and impossible) computer-controlled suspension and chassis technology has been applied to make a 469-horsepower 4000-pound Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG handle like an exotic, yet ride like a luxury car.
Our drive route in and around Stuttgart allowed us to stretch this maximum-strength E-Class on the infamous German autobahns and in the nearby mountainous regions. Sure, it reaches its 154-mph speed limiter before you can say "nicht schlecht" ("not bad"), but it'll also carve a Schwabish road like a bobsled. Starting with an all-new-for-'03 E500--a seriously good place to begin--AMG adds no less than 167 horsepower via a handbuilt, supercharged 5.4-liter V-8. More impressive still is that 516 lb-ft of torque is available from 2650 to 4500 rpm.
Although we'd like to see AMG offer a manual transmission as an option (on any of its models), 35 years of building highly tuned versions of roadgoing cars with automatics has put them at the pinnacle of this easy-to-drive configuration. This '04 E55 AMG comes closer to BMW's (manual transmission-only) M5 than anything preceding it. The problem is, BMW is planning a 500-horsepower V-10-powered Bavarian bobsled of its own. Where will it end? We don't know. Nor do we object.
2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
Pushing the performance boundaries, Mercedes-Benz unleashed the supercharged E55 AMG in Chicago. One of the highest performance sedans the world has ever seen, the E55 boasts 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Think about it: more power than a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 or last year's Dodge Viper. Oh, baby. The handbuilt engine features a Lysholm-type, belt-driving supercharger peaking at 11.6 psi and maximized by an intercooler. The resulting power can propel the E55 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds and reach a 155-mph top speed. The torque is managed by a five-speed automatic transmission programmed with sport-minded SpeedShift for quick gear changes, handled automatically or controlled manually via steering-wheel mounted buttons. Complete AMG treatment upgrades the brakes, suspension, wheels, exterior, and interior. And don't forget that engine.... The E55 goes on sale in May 2003 at $76,000.

My comments about the E55 are mainly based on several Mag reviews ... The consensus is that while the Merc has the power, the "sensation" is just not there. Not as responsive, no real feel for the car while undertaking hard corners and braking. It seems like the ultimate highway cruiser, lots of power and the automatic. The M5 just "feels" more capable. Suspension wise, braking and the added enjoyment of the 6 speed. The Merc seems to be more like a car you "ride" in while the M5 is more of a "drivers" car.
As far as the comparison to a Z06 ... don't get me wrong. The Z06 is definitely a better performer. The M5 is a much better dailey driver and does offer that extra element of performance as well, but on a track I have no doubt the Z will ROLL!! I am just saying, mainly for the stock C5s ... do not understinate the M5.
