Recommendations for reliability mods for the C5 base? (soft top)
I'm looking for mods, or parts that break down less a lot less, and improve the longevity of the vehicle, compared to the OEM parts.
There are a few that I know of, like the bronze gears for the pop-up headlights and the improved rear main seal for the engine.
Are there any other mods you all would recommend? (especially for the torque tube couplers) My Vette only has 48k, but please give recommendations for any mileage.
My rear main seal is leaking, so that's why I was asking especially for the torque tube couplers, cause the torque tube is going to get removed anyways, so I figured sense I'm going to be removing the torque tube anyways, if anyone got any recommendations for the couplers, that'd be a good idea to replace imo. and any recommendations for the Harmonic balancer? When it is super wobbly, I'll know which one to get.
If you are already dropping the TT, do the couplers (OEM IMO) and at least check the bearings to make sure they are good. If it is an A4, I would do the shifter cable while you have the TT down already as it is much easier. Not necessarily a whole new cable but definitely the grommets as they are prone to breaking due to AGE, not necessarily mileage. Plastic parts will wear out from temp cycles over the years in addition to mileage/use. As mentioned, check your HB, if it is wobbly, do it now while you are down for the TT work. Lastly, a new fuel filter/regulator. Relatively cheap and easy to swap out and know you are good to go.
Honestly - the biggest thing you can do to improve your Vette's durability is to clean the grounds. It's not sexy, or expensive, but it's the real weakpoint of these cars. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...tion-long.html
As others have said, if you are dropping the Torque Tube to do the rear main, rebuild the torque tube, replace the clutch (if applicable)
For the harmonic balancer, there are a lot of choices. The Summit house brand units seems to be a favorite. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...base/year/2002
DO NOT buy an underdrive unit. I highly recommend having the harmonic balancer pinned/keyway'd when you replace it.
Beware, both of these jobs are significant in the hours it takes to get them done. TT requires the whole rear chassis to be dropped. Balancer requires the steering rack to come out (be prepared to rebuild the steering rack, it's not uncommon).
These things go hard. Yours is barely even broken in yet. She probably still bleeds a little. Strap 8 pounds of boost to it and have fun keeping up with the joneses.
