For the life of me, I cannot understand why the FB C5 pages (and the F150 ones too) are filled with some idiots and J-A's. I left FB in 2020 right when the lockdown started as it just pissed me off with all of the BS. Started back up on FB earlier this year cause SickWeek uses FB to coord the event and pass info, so I figured I'd check out the F150 pages and the C5 pages. The following is the majority of what I see when I do go on there.
1. Some person will post a serious question, they'll say I am new and need some help etc. About 80% of the responses are stupid attempts at being a comedian, another 10% with seriously dumb recommendations and then 10% of decent folks trying to help. I love how someone will say definitively this is your problem and you need to do this to fix it? Really? no discussion of additional factual info to help with an informed option etc. You haven't seen the issue, just going off of a 2 line post and you magically know all the answers?
2. I am so tried of the posts on the C5 page of a C5 with snow on it and people saying my car is totaled etc. My god, it is worn out joke and not funny. Seems as though the serious folks have passed the torch to a new group of C5 moron owners who's real ambition is to be in stand up I guess. Okay that is kinda harsh, but damn get some new material!
3. So much mis-information. People posting stuff with no attempt to fact check the drivel they post cause they read it on FB, so it must be true.
All of this make me realize how the old school BBS (like this one) are still a much better online option for info pertaining to issues and such. I know I don't have to look at FB and I don't much because of the above crap but it is a direct reflection of modern society, a bunch of a-holes with a smart phone and a dumb brain-Not all of them, but a large percentage in my experience.
Old man rant off/
Yeah, the FB groups suck for the most part but I have found a couple decent ones. Usually based around FRC's/Z06's or performance oriented. I'm stuck squarely in the middle between the old guys that think they own a rare piece of automotive history and feel the need to add as much tacky color matched or chrome bits as they can and the young guys that can only afford a clapped out, 220k mile 1998 and are trying to turn it into a JDM RX7.

I just avoid Facebook - problem solved. However, you do find similar posting even here, although thankfully much less of it. This forum does offer sound advice for people seeking answers.
Forums like this (and other automotive forums I've joined) offer real value and outperform the useless trash on facebook groups and social media every time.
Fb does have value. You just need to identify the pages where that exists and unfollow those which do not. Same with YouTube. On its own, it is a crap pile. Curated, it has some wonderful resources.
Example.
I have long been a fan of Sloppy Mechanics and their various pages for the tech. But the tech hasn't advanced. And the retards fully took over. I'm not here for that on my screen so I finally reluctantly ditched them all.
Let me preface my statement with the fact I don’t like A holes or d bags but….
on the flip side of your statement I feel like there are tons of posts across all the C5 groups and I’m in a few. Where questions will be asked sometimes the same question multiple times a day. And people could have gotten the answers with Google or YouTube. There are literally tools out there to help and people are just too lazy to look or want you to do the work for them and provide the link.
That is the direct downfall and uselessness of many fb pages. While they do keep old posts, they do not faithfully represent when searched. Forums are the win for that. Historical knowledge with depth of information. And if you use Google to search the forum since our own search function has an extra chromosome, then you can find answers very quickly.
The benefits of the good fb pages are.... Better and more creative fabrication answers from the racer pages.... Or a lot more cutting edge / current parts and information since many vendors and younger owners simply do not use the forum for interaction and share in those spaces for attention instead.
Having a foot in either realm has worked well for me.
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say this, but I have no desire, need or future plan to use FB in any way.
Yep!
Also, many of the FB groups are filled with the "It's your car, do what you want" crowd. Sad that they pound on people trying to defend the poor Corvettes and not liking their stick-on hood vents or caliper covers.
Though I admit I have a flaw which comes out at times. Some rare cars are worth every penny. True. But many sellers try to gouge or top out the market by an extra five figures and I'd call them out. It is a useless personality tick which I try to curb as I age. Clint has corrected me on one or two which, when I looked more closely at the parts list I realize.... Yeah... Worth the call.
My car has been bantered about a half dozen times over the last 4 years or so on the C5 specific FB page. Mostly if not all positive from what I understand.
What is funny about that is I've never in my life had a facebook and likely never will.
Somebody told me about it second hand. Somehow my wife (has FB) got permission to the C5 page and has answered some of the questions for me.
Me personally the only thing I have a use for in FB is Marketplace. Hacking my way in there using the old ladies account.
It's pretty funny, she has a pretty good FB seller rating selling and buying all kinds of car parts. People I'm sure look at her profile and are like wtf is this chick doing selling car parts.
I never once looked at marketplace until a year or two ago. Somehow it turned into a low key addiction for a while to surf for temptation. I've since curbed that habit. But whenever I need a part there is a good chance I can find what I need on there for a fair price and close at hand.
All the common posts exist daily of course, but C5 Modified has been good overall. I of course am on a slew of others as well plus northeast regional club pages which are very hit or miss. CT where I live for exam is all but dead and the club caters to AARP members who still communicate only via mass email message boards from the early 90s!
C5 Modified had a schizm a year or two ago over kdtv owning it and running some people off. Another page was made and some core guys went there but it sort of petered out.
I still push the Corvette Track Enthusiasts because they are always devising new upgrades and fabbed parts. Personality wise.... I have brought questions here to the forum on custom work and been both ignored or told no way.... But have brought the same questions there and either had a "sure, that can be done and also this along with this other thing and here's how" or "that's a good idea" and then they figure it out or have a link to someone who can do it or has.
The American spirit is alive and thriving in that group!

Ray Saez does a decent job as Admin for the C5 Modified group. It and Corvette Track Enthusiasts are both good ones to belong to, for me anyway.
