Default Good Deal?

Looking to purchase a 00' C5 base, 44k miles, interior and exterior are in great shape, clean Carfax, Borla exhaust (I like it so no need to upgrade later). C6 Z06 wheels (giving me 2 sets of the same wheels, so I can sell one of the sets), aftermarket air intake (not sure what kind), only real "issue" with the car is it has the EBCM problem with ABS and Traction Control, but the dash lights go away if you turn the car off and on again. Car was listed for 18,600 and got it down to 16,950 cash. I've been searching the market for about 6 months now and this is one of the better listings that I've come across. What are yalls thoughts?

I bought my Pewter '00 Base 'Vert ~15 years ago for almost that exact amount. It has been a great car...I've put nearly that amount in upgrades (CAI, Shocks, Cam, Heads, etc...) which now has me @ ~420HP, and it runs like a Z06! Go for it!

The EBCM is no big deal but does hurt overall value if it's an existing issue.

Anything outside of a private resale will be difficult as the car will likely end up at auction if traded into a dealer, etc.

I'd be happier around 15k for this particular car without knowing more.

This is being sold by a smaller private dealership, he recently put in a new harmonic balancer, water pump, tensioner pulley, sway bar links, wheel bearings, inner outer tie rods, and the usual fluids.

IMO, that is high for a 2000 MY car, should be more like $12.5K-$14K.
My advice, keep looking, lots more cars out there, widen your search area, wait for a better deal.
And, search for a 2001 or newer, less ABS issues.

M6 is worth more than an automatic. Make sure the tires are not over five years old. Prices vary seasonally in northern areas. Not a bargain but if you like it make a lower offer. Expect future maintenance expense. Good luck!

It is amazing how folks can decide to "look" for the rest of their life to save a couple thousand on a used car. Without actually seeing the car, there isn't anyone on this forum good enough to call a car like this that close. Sure, any amount less than the negotiated price would make someone "feel better". Are you trying to "feel better" or are you wanting to buy a car?

Have the car inspected by a known C5 tech and if no problems are found, buy it and enjoy!

good price based on your description. I wouldn’t worry too much about the EBCM. I believe you can pull a fuse to get rid of the display.

It's a good deal, if you believe it's a good deal based on average market values....The low mileage, and clean Carfax would indicate in most cases, well cared for automobile...Sorry to hear about the EBCM, you can certainly at some point buy a good used one....The 2000 Corvette overall is a reliable offering....I've had my 2000 C5 coupe for 21 years, with 92K on the odometer now....Hands down the most reliable Corvette and cheapest to own for unscheduled maintenance by far....I can't say it's been the cheapest when it's come to the modification department... I hope you get what you are looking for!! Good luck!!

In general try to throw a wide net when looking for a C5. Check cars in multiple states. There are pristine cars out there, without issues, with low miles and at reasonable prices. In early 2021 I bought my 27,000 original mile coupe for $18,000. Completely original, flawless. I’m in FL and I searched Fl, Ga, Nc, Sc. Ended up buying one in Myrtle Beach, SC; 350 miles away. I have zero regrets.

Prices haves gone up and down since then, but my guess is $18k still gets you a really clean car with zero issues. Just keep in mind these are older cars and they will need some love along the way. The balancer, for example. In a nutshell don’t settle.

Food for thought…. Not only is ABS a foundational safety feature in modern cars and trucks, the C5 in particular uses the EBCM for active handling, ie., may save your *** in a turn…. I would not buy a car, much less a sports car, without the ABS and traction control fully operative. I know others may feel differently.

Now, if you’re not concerned with traction control initially, but see some value in having it there are some companies that may be able to help you. See below.

ABS is a real deal. It can be an issue if you drive in rain or over cook a corner. If you go to sell it becomes a larger issue.

Negotiate a reduction in price to fix it.You can get a new box if that is all that is wrong.

Selling a non 100% functioning Corvette is not good unless you plan to fix it. Too many good ones out there for just a few dollars more.
If money is that tight are you able to afford a Corvette in the first place, what if a Torque Tube or clutch goes next?

First you should pull the errorr codes from the car, you can use an external devise or use the cars internal display....search the forum for directions on how to pull them, Recarding the EBCM if you are over 50 you can manage driving it OK since they were not introduced widely til the 1990's. ABS is a valid safety item fo pulling the codes is essential. Buying a used EBCM is about $1500-2000 from a reliable reseller is it doesn't work so deduct another $2100 from your offer.

I would prefer the ABS be working and unless you can get a super deal that takes replacement (if you can find a good EBCM) cost into account, maybe looking a bit more is not a bad idea. However, just depends on if the car you are considering has the other things you are looking for.
