I have realized a dream and traded my 98 silver coupe for a 2001 Black on Black Z the other day. I'm looking for some advice on which of the available shifters is the best for a daily driven street car(low noise, vibration, and livable shift effort). Please remember my lovely wife will be occasionally driving the car. I have been reading this site for almost a year now but this is my first post. I greatly respect your opinions and thank you for your help. :flag
There are about three threads currently running right now about this subject.
If your wife is driving it, you might want to stay stock or shortened stock.
The others are much better but take more effort. If you din't mind the extra effort, then you will want a Hurst. It, as you will see by the other threads, is the run away favorite.
Looks like the Hurst then. I had seen another thread, almost a month ago, but it left me still wondering. Every car we've had has been equiped with a short throw, the wife will be fine. I just didn't want to hear it!
I would suggest that you sit behind the wheel and/or drive a car with a Hurst, Ripper etc. before you buy. What is right for you may not be right for someone else. I have driven cars with just about ALL of the aftermarket shifters out there, and for me the best is the Ripper. Automatic transmissions are run away favorites on C5's too, doesn't make it the right choice for everyone either :)
I have a Hurst Performance Shifter in mine. And would recommend it to anyone. If you are concerned with the shift effort, the Hurst kit comes with additional springs and quite easy to swap while the unit is off the car.
I would however suggest going to a heavier than stock shift **** to further help in vibration noise reduction.
Just ordered my hurst today from xtreme, hope it gets here before I go to "The BIG Sand Box" over there. :flag Thanks everyone for the quick info.
The Ripper get's my vote ... but good luck with the Hurst, it's a decent choice as well. Make sure those stops are adjusted right to prevent the possibility of kissing your syncro's goodbye.
I don't know about anyone else but my hurst is pretty stiff but my car isn't broke in all the way(800 miles) I can hear stuff coming from the boot but not much. Every once in a while i hear a clunking right under my shifter it sounds like. Is that where the CAGS goes? does it swing freely if so thats what the noise is. If no I might have to go to the Dealership to have it looked at. The shifter is awsome though. WORKS like a charm.
I have the hurst but now with all the hp i have and the 4.10s it has gotten a lot stiffer to shift. I may try and use a cut stock one but so far there is no complaints with the hurst.
Call me krazy...but my stock shifter feels just fine to me...it shifts really smooth and it doesnt rattle of course...i have felt my friends shifter and it feels really stiff and kinda hard to shift...plus i hear something rattling...thats just my opinion
I wouldnt take anything for the way my car shifts now...there is absoloutly no reason to change the shifter to me...anyone else in here like their stock shifter ?!?
Yes i simply love the stock shifter. I was concidering cutting to shortening the throw. What is the best way to cut the stock shifter? How much do you cut?
