Default Short Shifter Preference?

Hurst?
B&M Ripper?
KPS?
BPP?

If you could tell me _why_ you prefer one over the other, that would be great.

The Ripper has been around the longest, has the shortest throw, and has no stops to set. There you have it!:D

I know that the original question was about "short shifters," but I think that the Mallett shifter is the best by far.

It's not a "short shifter" like the others, and that's exactly why I think it's the best. I had the stocker, Kirban, Corvette Concepts, and Ripper before getting the Mallett. I had the Ripper the longest of the aforementioned shifters, and I wanted to like it since it was better than the stocker (and the others). But the fact of the matter was that it was difficult to shift, despite being precise. It wasn't fun to deal with. The Mallett uses the stock shifter base and geometry, so it shifts with complete ease.

Just wanted to give you my thoughts on an often-overlooked option!

It's often overlooked because it is $450!
It may be a great shifter but you can get a great shifter for 169 or less and it's called HURST! :smash: :smash: :D

The Kirban is less noisy than the Hurst or the Ripper and to many guys/gals, that's a big deal.

The Ripper is the stiffest followed by the Hurst and the Kirban.

I recommend you test drive a few cars with the shifters in them to get a "feel" for the difference. I have had (in others cars so it is not apples to apples) most every aftermarket shifter made. For my money in the Z06 the stand out for me is the Ripper. Very short throws, very precise, easy to power shift etc. With the MGW **** I have zero noise, and yes - it is the stiffest feeling shifter out there, but that is not a problem, in fact I like it.

So bottom line, and if you do a search on the threads, most are happy with the aftermarket shifter that they purchased, because the factory unit for most of us needs a lot of improvement. That said many are happy with their factory shifter as well - to each his/her own.

I figured after installing my MGW **** on my stock shifter that I would never need to buy a short throw shifter... Until I got to try Les's car with the Ripper... Well, I now have a Ripper and with the MGW **** it isn't any noiser than stock but the throws are much shorter and far more precise.

Woosch,

And I know of at least one other convert to the Ripper after trying my car, maybe two :)

I can't really opine on which short shifter is better because I have only used the Breathless Performance short shifter. That said, I personally feel that the 16 different positions that you can place the **** in and 3 sets of springs that come with the shifter can't be beat. I played around with most, if not all, the different **** positions and strings until I had it set just right for me. The throws are VERY short and exact and the construction/material of the shifter is first rate. I can't wait until it's broken in a bit more. I hope this helps.

After reading all the answers to your question, it's pretty much all said. So now the question to you is what do you hope to gain with a short shifter? I will only add that I have a ripper, I bought a hurst, looked it over, nice shifter, I sold it new in the box and retained my Ripper. Just personal prefrence for the shorter throw. Ric

Exactly. :)

I disagree. You can get a BETTER (than stock) shifter for $169 -- and I've owned a lot of them -- but I don't think most of the short shifters are "great" at all when mated to these trannies. Short, exact shifts are nice. Working so hard to get them wasn't for me.

I don't think that the intent of the original post was to see which shifter he should get for $169. Some (many?) people don't even KNOW that the Mallett shifter exists, and since it is SO different from these other shifters, I don't think there's anything wrong with letting people know about it. THEY can decide whether or not to shell out the bucks for it, since it's their money.

Ever try the Mallett yourself, Racer? Hell, you might even like it. :) (But, yeah, it costs WAAAAAY too much.)

Never tried it, but I also said it probably is a great shifter and I am sure it is. Most guys get an aftermarket shifter because they are not confident with the stock one. Personaly, when I was under full throttle, I was stuggling hitting third consistantly, you don't want to be apprehensive when you are taking on a formidable opponant. I shift my car now with all the confidence in the world, I know when I go for third it is going to hit hard. My point is why pay $459 for a shifter when you could buy a Hurst or Ripper, and throw in a Blackwing or a set a Bisteins or maybe a set of Euro tailights for the same or still less than the Mallett shifter? Not many guys are going to pick the Mallett, as you probably know by the polls. Kirk, take a drive up here and let me take your bad boy for a spin. :D Maybe you will convince me it is time for a shifter change.

I hear you. And that's what I did first. I went through the Kirban, CC, and Ripper before "trying out" the Mallett (I figured I'd send it right back, especially given its price, if it weren't better than the Ripper). It's just that after really trying to like the Ripper (since it WAS better than the stocker), I realized that it wasn't fun shifting it. And since I really only drive my Z when it's nice out -- to have fun in it -- it was time to see if something was better. (But I have the intake, too, so I've got the best of both worlds! ;))

And, clearly, money has to be not much of an object here to begin with... BUT, since the driving experience has gotten so much better with the new shifter, it's much easier to justify (or just forget about?) the high price tag.

Not many guys are going to pick the Mallett, as you probably know by the polls.
Well, you know how this goes. No one lists the Mallett in their polls 'cause no one knows about it ('cause not many people HAVE it, 'cause the price IS too high). I wish Mallett would pay me to promote it, 'cause then it'd be more worth my while to sing its praises. ;)

Kirk, take a drive up here and let me take your bad boy for a spin. :D Maybe you will convince me it is time for a shifter change.
Let's meet half way... Say... Lake Erie? LOL :D

Here is Kirk driving with his Mallett shifter :steering: Here is what Kirk thinks of his Mallett shifter  This is the smile Kirk gets from enjoying driving his Mallett shifted Z06 :D This is what it is all about, being happy with your car and enjoying driving it. Sounds like you are both. :auto:

i have a b&m in both my vettes and they're great. the b&m install on the z06 was very easy.

i have never had a chance to try any of the other shifters on the market. my decision for the b&m in the z came from my past experience with b&m shifters in my c4 and my father's mustang.

I'm getting the Mallett based on the feedback from Kirk. It sounds like exactly what I want. Sure it may be overpriced but so what, its just money. :)
