Hi guys my name is Jacqueline and I just bought a new ZO6 last week. I brought it home on April 6th. I want to change the shifter ****. Last night I tried to remove it but couldnt, does it have threads?, can someone help me ?? :banghead: < I love these little guys.. :) http://hometown.aol.com/gearheadgirl...ollection.html
Yep, the **** is threaded -- but you have to get a PIN out before unscrewing the ****. Here are the steps:
1) Carefully pry the shift pattern plastic piece out of the top of the **** (use a small, flathead screwdriver, and just keep prying around the edges).
2) With the pattern out, you'll expose a rectangular shaped silver pin/wedge" that needs to be pulled straight up and out of the top of the ****. (I had to clamp a Vice-Grip on the pin head, put a heavy-duty screwdriver between its jaws, and using the leverage of the top of the **** pried up on the Vice-Grips. Whatever you do, keep hold of the VG's, too, 'cause there's no telling if your pin will come out easily or after lots of yanking, prying, and cursing.)
3) With the pin completely out, the **** simply unscrews.
I'd cover any surfaces that could be scratched with a towel or something as you do this. You might want to apply a back-and-forth rocking motion to the Vice-Grips as you try to coax the pin out.
Vette Essentials actually has the instructions (with pictures) on their site. But like others are saying, removing that pin is not all that easy and the vice grips are a must. Just be patient.
Thanks! Now I see this post. I gave up trying yesterday, pulled the cap and saw the "wedge". I gave up and dropped it off to the dealer today for it to be installed tomorrow :banghead:
