Default Magnetic Oil Drain Plug

Do you use a magnetic oil drain plug?

Reasons why or not would be welcome!

Yes, I am also interested in this....I have heard alot of people using them, but is there a particular upside?

Someone also directed me to the Corvette Mall to purchase a filter, and it comes with a magnetic drain plug...but there is no way to get only the filter...you don't need a new magnetic drain plug all the time do you? Sorry to sound ignorant, I am new to all of this.

Does anyone know where you can find some information on this magnetic plug. I don't really know anything about them.

Do it. I have one on mine, and when I had Car-Vette change my oil last week, Shawn showed me the shop rag which had a few metal shavings on it from the plug.

It's $5.

Do it.

The magnetic plug will catch/hold some of the metal wear that floats in the oil. That plus regular oil and filter changes. A magnetic plug goes in on the first oil change of every car I own.

I use one. The idea is to catch any little bits (or bigger bits) of steel that may end up in the oil pan. It's only about a $5 investment, so why not?

Not only is it just cheap insurance to keep some of the metal out of the filter, its also a good gauge of engine wear and potential problems.

Last week I went to a local Chevy dealer to purchase one. The parts guy said on a 03 z06, it already comes with a magnetic drain plug. Anyone hear the same thing?

I was told the same thing about my '02, but when I did my first oil change, lo and behold, no magnetic plug. I think the source of confusion is that the standard GM replacement part IS magnetic, so the dealerships assume that's how they're built. Not so.

I've used them for years in many different engs.

#1076 looks like the right one. FYI..... Ken Fichtner is cheaper on the GM one and a supporting forum dealer/vendor!!

Note the GM Magnetic Drain Plug does come with a new o-ring as a bonus!!

This is weird. My 2000 Z28 came with a magnetic drain plug and when I changed C5brunette's 2001 Z06, it had one too.

Heya.

Yes.....use one.

My local dealer's parts counter is awesome...have been getting help from the same counter person for 18 years.

He said the same thing: according to their parts diagram, the '03 Z06's already have a magnetic plug. However, when I took mine out the first time, it didn't look magnetic.

I bought a new one, and compared. It has a very obvious magnetic "slug"-like piece in the center of the plug, which the stock one did not.

Bottom line: when a Chevy parts expert looks up the replacement part in the computer, it shows the magnetic. But, the car was not built with one originally.

Recommend doing it. Probably the best reasons were pointed out already: 1.) as an indicator of a major problem, and 2.) cheap insurance to maybe catch some pieces.

Good luck.

:)
