The first mod I want to get for my new Z is a shifter.
I think I have narrowed it down to the "Breathless Performance Products" or the "The B & M "Ripper" shifter". I am leaning towards the BPP product because it looks to be far more adjustable.
Any opinions? or maybe a better product that Im missing??
You're probably missing the Mallett shifter. Way too expensive for some -- but, the cost is relative to just how much you want to enjoy driving your car. :)
(The Ripper is too darn stiff to be fun. I've heard similar stiffness issues with the BPP...)
All the benefits of an aftermarket shifter (shorter throw, firmer feel), without the drawbacks (noise, too stiff, cost). Total cost to me was $70, but that's because I bought another stock shifter to modify, otherwise total cost was $20 for a shift ****. I could have done it using my own if I'd known how easy it really is. Took me about 2 hours from start to finish.
i have the b&m and have never had the chance to feel the others. i am very happy with my b&m though. i have one in my 94' as well.
the b&m suits my driving style perfectly. it's not too stiff to me.
i would love to try the others, but there's no way i can justify the price of the mallett without using it. i find it hard to believe that it can feel that much better.
as for the breathless, i almost ordered it. but then i felt that the less stuff i had to tweak and mess with the better. but i think the biggest reason i went with b&m is just my past experience with them.

Re: Shifter Brand (Bman)
Shift throw can also be shortened by shortening top part of the shaft. What you are talking about is actually moving the pivot point higher. The problem with doing this is that the stock noise isolator may no longer fit. Anyway, shortening the stock shifter works great. The throws are much shorter and much much more precise. I really can't imagine any improvement over this. :D
Look at the shaft/ball size difference between the BBP and the Ripper, the ripper looks longer so I figured it would have a shorter throw than the BBP.
I was going to install the BPP shifter, glad I didn't two people w/ Z's showed me that they vibrate like crazy. A couple others have other brands and it seems they are always missing shifts on the drag strip. I stayed with the stock unit never missed a shift on the track and no virbration. :steering:
I sticking with the stock for now, too many comments about other shifters. It seems that if you car is a strip car then go aftermarket. If a street/strip maybe, if street only stock is the best. That is just the impression I have from what I have read.
Ya - - You can go with mild, mid, or stifffff springs. I like the mid stiffness. CHeck out the Hurst web site - I got the billit shifter and LOVE it. I have a very built Z28 with a B&M ripper but I like the Hurst better on the Z06;
but that's kind of apple's & orange's comparison, I guess.. :steering:
Hasn't anyone mentioned or considered the Hurst... I love mine and it's very accurate and a huge upgrade over stock.
:yesnod:
I just think that most people are tired of these posts and are not posting anymore. If you do a search, there are lots of polls on which aftermarket shifter is used and Hurst is the overwhelming favorite. I am not saying that it is the best, I am just saying according to the polls most people are using it. :thumbs: :cheers:
