Default Oil Change questions

I am thinking of doing my own oil changes for my Z06 especially if my hook up at the dealership can't get me any free ones. I have changed my own oil before but on old used crappy everyday drivers where much care is not needed as much.

1) What oil should I use? I saw on one of the other forums that Wal-mart has 5qt Mobile-1 synthetic for under $20. Is this good to use? If not what brand/type and expected cost? Any other good deals out there?

2) I plan on getting ramps. My driveway slopes. Should I aim the front of the car uphill or down to allow the most effective drainage (i haven't looked under the car yet to see where the drain plug is)?

3) How long should I let it drain before capping and refilling?

4) Should I replace oil filter every oil change (this is my first at 1500 miles)? If so, what brand filter?

I know these may sound like very stupid questions, but I have changed oil before as I said. This is my first Vette and I want to do everything perfect.

Changing the oil yourself is great! It gives you a sense of accomplishment and saves you money.

I'm going to keep using mobil-1 5w30 becuase it's readily available and does great. Some forum users use amsoil, redline, or royal purple.

Get some rhino ramps for 35 bucks at walmart or an auto-parts store. They're low enough profile to get under the nose of the vette. The air dam scrapes, but who cares. You'll want the rear of the car HIGHER than the front for the most effective drainage. I get the car up on the ramps, start the oil draining, then use my jack to lift the rear higher and leave it. I let it back down off the jack before I get back under.

Oil filters good for only so long. With my stang I changed the oil and filter every 6k. If your driving hard you might want to change the filter a bit sooner. You just don't want it to get full and open the bypass valve. I'm going to go by the DIC for now. Some owners change the filter every 3k and replace the bit of oil lost with it.

I'd say you can re-use your stock filter if it's only got 1500 miles, but why not get a new upf-44 or k&n while you're changing it.

Hope this helps!

I've stuck with Mobil 1, 5w30 .. if you're in a hot climate 10w30 is ok. Definitely use a quality synthetic.

Rear end should be a little higher than the front. Drain is on the front of the pan.

3) How long should I let it drain before capping and refilling?

I let mine drain for about an hour and a half ..

4) Should I replace oil filter every oil change (this is my first at 1500 miles)? If so, what brand filter?

Always change the filter when you change the oil.

i am curious - where do you lift the rear and what do you use to lift it?

I place a 2x4 on the rear suspension crossmember... then use my floor jack to raise it

There's a safety issue here. Theoretically, the ramps should always be on a flat surface. Otherwise, there's a risk of sliding. If you start out with the ramps on a sloped surface, don't come back here and whine about how the car slipped and crushed your skull / chest / fingers :smash:
