I live in Chicago, but drove home to Omaha yesterday to surprise my dad for father's day in the Z06. Along the way, I ran short on gas in Iowa and had to buy some 89 octane. This morning she runs like crap. Pings and detonates anytime I get beyond half throttle. In Chicago I ALWAYS run 93 octane, but of course small towns in Iowa don't offer this "luxury."
So luckly I've only got a 1/4 tank of this crap left in the tank. But even in Omaha the highest octane I can find is 91 octane. Before I top the tank off with octane, I'm wondering: Have any of you used octane boost products before? Any horror stories? I'm a little worried about screwing up sensors, etc. Also, there's a local gas station that has some "no lead" 100 octane fuel. I'm wondering if I should add a few gallons of that to balance off the crappy 89 I got in there now. Since it has no lead, it should be okay, right? Just don't want to mess up my catalytic convertors and/or sensors...
Any feedback would be tremendously appreciated, thanks! :chevy
Just found out they are out of the 100 octane fuel (darn). But I did find an Amoco with 92 octane. So I've got about 4 gallons left of the crap gas... I wonder if topping it off with 92 octane will make her run good? Only other option is an additive..... Anyone here use additives before?
The additives won't work as well as filling her to the top with the 92 octane. You aren't hurting anything, the knock sensors are hearing the detonation and pulling timing is all. Don't get on it hard until all the weak gas is gone, and good luck!
I have heard that Iwoa gas stations sell a lot of gas that is cut with heavy doses of alcohol, heavier than the 10% we find around here. The alcohol could be adding to the problem, it will probably clear up when you get back to civilzation,in the mean time the computer should keep your engine safe as long as you go easy on the gas pedal.
