The only horsepower pruducing parts of a LS6 longblock that are different from a LS1 longblock (2001 and up) is the cam and heads.
So it is a lot easier to just put a hotter cam and ported heads on the LS1 and get even more horsepower than the 405 hp LS6.
Thats why so many people do a "heads and cam" job.
It is just not cost effective to swap in a LS6 unless insurance is paying for it!

I seem to remember a difference in the block casting as well-ports between the cylinders that allowed the air pressures between the (moving) pistons to
equalize, allowing the engine to spin up faster.

av, you are absolutely correct on this point. But only early with regard to 2001 LS1 and EARLIER blocks that are still the old style .
In about Sept. 2000, the 2001 regular C5's began receiving the exact same block that you describe, that all Z06's have, and all LS1's also now have since that date.
To the best of my research, the only other longblock parts that are different at all are the PCV system and the pistons.
Z06's are a stunning factory race car, and the best factory Vette ever! But an American Hot Rodder can make a coupe accelerate faster for less money, is my only point.
