Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (32valve)
Wow, the car performs like a Ferrari and Porsche. I can take my 99 Cobra and make it handle better than a Z06 and out power it (which it already does) but still its a Mustang. Its a Cobra but its still a mustang. The reason a Porsche and Ferrari cost more is not because of performance (well in a way it is) but there is ALOT more a Porsche and Ferrari have. To name a few... The Porsche has AWD that cost more, better leather interior, many many more buttons to push, hand built, carbon fiber body panels, came OVER seas, and if you haven't figured out its a FERRARI and a PORSCHE. You pay ALOT for the name. I understand your argument but saying the Vette is equal to an exotic is not true. Thats like me saying a 03 Cobra is better than a Z06 because it can hang with it in a straight line race. Its still a MUSTANG and you cant compare a Mustang to a Corvette. They are in two totally different classes. As is a Vette to a Ferrari. Oh and just so you know, I was saying if they want to stick a $50,000 price tag on a car the LEAST they can do is make it to where there is NO noise and NO movement when you cut it off. Come on my MR2 or Cobra neither do it and they cost alot less. I'm not saying the Vette is bad dont get me wrong but Chevy is known for their recalls. And this will be a recall. I talked to Chevy service dept yesterday and they said that they are trying to fix it now and when he knows something I will know something. So this will be a recall and it shouldn't be nomal.
So you are saying a boxster is a better car because it comes from overseas?
Everyone has their choice in cars so lets not start a pissing contest because I guarantee it will never end. People usually buy what they think is the best value. Most of the people on this board could get an exotic if they choose, since the cost of some is not that much more than a vette. However, for whatever reasons they choose corvette. I for one will say that I DO NOT agree that a ferrari or porsche is a better car, but again its only my opinion and why I drive a corvette. Can't we all just get along :D
Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (shanzung)
Chevy, Ford, Porsche, BMW, Ferrari; they all have quality problems to some extent. A friend of mine who has had numerous new Ferraris and Porsches over the years could rant and rave about the poor quality of both brands for an hour. He has had four 996's (911's) since 1999 and two of the four had leaking power steering racks and the broken interior trim piece problems that you read about. The Ferrari's have had poor paint jobs, shifters that don't engage, lousy air conditioners, a bad coil on a new F355 while it was being off loaded at his house by the dealer and a buz like vibration on the same 355 that was never fixed...now I'm ranting and raving about it and I never owned them! And don't even get me started about my friend's 02 M3...I would have sued BMW by now. The point is my Z06 has the wierd rattle at shut off, the ticking under the hood at idle, the marbles in the can noise, the popping exhaust when I let off of the gas (which I like!) but these "quality" problems are not unique to Corvettes.
The quality of my C5 is better than that of my C4 and hopefully the C6 will be better than the C5.
Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (shanzung)
My 01 6 does make the "marbles in a can" noise when accelerating. However, it does not make a "clunking" noise when shuting down.
On another note, I was taught to park car with manual transmission in reverse, not first. I don't know why one would be better than the other, it is just what I was taught in driver's ed, many many, many moons ago.

Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (shanzung)
I had the same problem with my SVT Contour. There were two noises. One from the location of the throwout bearing, it rattled when the trans was in neutral and the clutch released, stopped rattling when the clutch was depressed then released again. The second sound was like marbles in a can when the car was started and stopped. That came from the catalytic converter.
I have the same noises with my '03 Z06 under the same conditions. I guess I am use to hearing both of them.

Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (shanzung)
Got my zo6 last week.I noticed immediately the noise you state when shutting down in neutral.I usually shut down w/ clutch pressed down to park in 1st gear, then release the clutch after motor stops.Car is then resting on the e brake. Weird when it does it w/o depressing the clutch & shutting down in neutral.Video did mention a noise. So just shut down w/ clutch depressed..... By the way, I love my new Z more & more each day.
Re: "Clunking" noise when shutting off the engine (Dr.Ron)
Interesting - on a related topic - the early ZR-1s have this same noise on shut down with the ZF, and also, lots of synchro noises in first on initial release of the clutch. So ZF changed from straight cut gears to bevelled gears in 93, and it quieted the tranny alot - but it also reduced the torque rating of the tranny by 50 ft-lbs. So there was something lost by making it more civilized. I would think that the average Z06 owner wants performance at all costs, so it shouldn't be a problem, right? If you wanted quiet, then go for the coupe or vert!! just my 0.02. :seeya
