Default Cooling Questions

I recently ordered a 175 degree thermostat and in reading the various input on cooling the vette, I'm a little confused. Can the car be reprogrammed to turn on the fans earlier or do I need an additional fan controller to do this ? Can I reprogram the car without specialty tools and if not is this something that Chevy can do ? I'd like to leave the car as stock as possible with minimal but functional improvements.

Using one of the various forms of edit tools you can set you fan on and off to what ever temp you like. The Hypertech, Diablo and I believe the LS1 edit, not to mention the Tech II.

To reprogram the fans through the cars computer you need a program called LS1 Edit or a hand held Predator computer, there is also a separate fan controller box that is sold that turns them on at a lower temp. Are you overheating? Aluminum engines run hotter than the cast iron we are used too.

No, I'm not overheating, but yesterday in stop and go traffic she'd run up to 225 then start cooling down. I would imagine that a lower temp would be better for the engine. Thanks to all who have replied...Andy

:lurk: I'm curoious about this subject too. My Z runs 220 ish on the hot days then lowers back to 200 with the A/C on. Would it be better to get a 178 stat and set the fans to turn on earlier to keep the car under 200? Or is the stock setup just fine?

Is the LS 1 edit a program or tool ? Is it reasonably priced and where can you get it ? Would it be better to have a shop do this ?

LS1 edit is an expensive program that most people go to a dyno shop to use, but you engines are not overheating, aluminum engines run hotter for lower emissions; and the aluminum engine has to expand a certain amount so everything is at the right tolerance.

Great Todd, Thanks for the information, I feel a lot more comfortable about the temps I'm running.

I understand they run hotter, but they also run much slower when hot. I'm just interested for performance reasons.

Try the fan controller. It runs about $180 and is real simple to install. No cutting of wires is necessary and you can control when the fans turn on by the turn of a screw.

I recommend using a lower thermosat with the controller @172 or 178 unit
I have the controller and 178 therm and my car never goes above 196 on a 90 degree day sitting in traffic.

Under normal driving conditions it is rock steady at 187 degrees.
