Just noticed leak on garage under differential. Weather has gotten hotter. Is an overflow common, or is a seal leak more likely? Most cars I have owned have not had differential leaks. Car only has 10K miles. Thanks, George
Half axle seal leaks are unfortunately very common on C5s. My driver side was replaced at 10k as well. I now have over 21k and everything is still dry. It is a easy repair for your dealer under warranty. As my service advisor said, let's get it fixed because it will not get any better!!
i'm not sure that it is the seal....I once read a article that said there is a overflow at the top of the rear and bowling green had been known to use more "oil" or whatever you want to name it..fluid...and under extreme heat and hard driving will tend to leak...now I had it done twice on my 01' coupe six speed and my 2003 Z06 has less than 1500 miles on it and it started leaking on Monday...now I live in NY and it has been cold here until Monday and it went from 60 to 90 and humid overnight...now I have the leak...at let me tell you I have not beat on this car at all..yet!!! I have got on it many times but have not baked the tires yet....so I think it's not that big a deal..and looking back I would have not changed the other two seals on my 01'...it is a pain in the butt bringing the car in and letting the dealer screw around with it..
Of course there is one way to to know for sure. Get underneath the car and see where the drip is coming from. If it is the half axle seal, that area will have visible signs of wetness. I had drops hanging off the driver side half axle housing on my car. There is probably an upper vent port on the diff housing itself so if overfilled, I would expect to see some burbing of fluid higher up on the cental housing. The wetness will be seen in a completely different area of the housing from an half axle leak.
Driving hard at the track, I could smell the gear oil, but could never find any evidence. I changed the fluid, and went to sebring. After some hard driving I had a visible leak. Yesterday I got under there, and it is blowing out of what seems to be a funny kind of vent. I cant see it but it feels like a bolt that is not completely tight, but you cannot tighten it. I had the diff a little overfilled. I let some drain out, and cleaned it up. I'm going to wait and see if it starts again.
Thanks for the replys. I checked it out an it looks like the leak is from the vent. Temp have jumped up to the 90s. I was hoping that was the answer.
After doing a searching, I was surprised how many folks had leaks. I can understand the early C5, but I would think GM would fix the seal issue by the time the later versions of the C-5 rolled out. Having a seal go at 10K is a little ridiculious. Glad mine was just the vent. Just don't have good dealer service in my area. Thanks, G
