Another bit of information to add to your search procedure is J Rod. He has the actual procedure for doing this mod.
First of all, if you are familiar with how to take the filter on and off that would be a huge help in visualizing how to do this mod. Essentially you remove the stock air cleaner box. The next issue is how to clamp the air filter and the air filter frame in the same position without the air cleaner box top. 1. you can shorten the stock wire and plastic lock/clamp assembly 2. the zip tie mod, in which you just snug up the air filter and frame. The neat thing about this mod is you still use the VERY good stock AC Delco 917C air filter.
I have seen a few people just cut most of the top of the air cleaner box out and they said it worked great and no zip tie needed. You still get the good seal all the way around too. How do the rest of you feel about this way of doing it?
I figured it was probably that simple! :yesnod: Thanks!
Regarding cutting the airbox top, that sounds like it would work good, the only caveat being you can't just go back to stock as easily. You should be able to buy the box top from GM though. Hmmm...

I actually considered this but wound up getting the 2002 air filter cleaner box. I felt I want ed the prophalatic for rain and snow
The fact is your thought on the matter will work. You just need to dremel enough holes, BUT not so big (one in. sized holes regularly cut in will work) and so many that weakens the structural properties of the box. This mod however you decide to do it is the cheapest 10 rwhp you can get for the buck!!! (ZERO!!)
You can also lay a 16" long piece of 2' dia. PVC pipe across the paper filter, then use the stock clamps and straps to hold it in place. This is a 30 second mod to do or return to stock.
Ok, so now that I have the ziptie mod, I noticed there is nothing really holding the bottom part of the aribox in. The two grommet/studs holders slid into the airbox cover. Anyone do anything to remedy this or do you just let the box and MAF "hang" there?

Let it hang there, most aftermarket units of a similar size (blackwing) don't mount to anything either.
