I am the owner of a new Mil. Yellow Z06. I will be using the car at various track events and wish to know about racing harnesses. Any particular brand, style, etc. recommendations.
Are you going to intstall a roll bar or harness bar? If you decide on a harness bar I have one for sale. I have a roll bar in the Z06 and removed the harness bar from the coupe when it was traded in. The mounting point for the shoulder straps is either a harness bar or a roll bar, the harness bar mounts to your stock seat belt mounts, no drilling. You can pick up lap and sub belt mounts from one of the forum vendors. I have G-force belts with the cam lock. I have also used Simpson with no problems
:lurk: I'm also interested in this... I'm going to do a bar w/ 5-pts in the future. Can I get those details on the bar and harneses (what color) and how do you install the crotch belt with a stock seat? (any holes to be cut?) Original poster has first dibs.
Im using the Schroth Profi 2-ASM 5 point harness w/camlock. It has 2in lap belts and 3in shoulder belts. The lap belt can convert between a pull-up and pull-down type tensioning. Plus the ASM "block" lets your inboard shoulder rotate a little so theres less chance of you submarining.
As for the crotch strap, mine just comes up the front of the seat. It mounts to a cross bar that I bolted in underneath the mounting points for the seat.
I have the bar from R-D Racing a vendor, nice set up, inexpensive, with the 3 inch G-Force belts. I stopped using the anti-sub strap it interfered with the front motor on the seat. This system holds me tight in the seat and I still use the seat belts over the 5 point, just in case.
If you install and USE a 5-point harness, you should consider installing a roll cage. If the car flips and the 5th belt prevents you from submarining, your head and upper body will be crushed in the rollover.
This came up in a different forum a couple of days ago.
Good point and I understand the risk. At this point though I do not believe I need the full protection as I only go to instructionals and not open racing.
Do a search in the autocrossing/roadracing section and you'll find a boat load of threads on this subject including info on every type out there and mounting instructions.
As to roll-over being more dangerous with a five or six point, I've seen this debated all over the internet and my opinion is don't worry. I have yet to hear of an actual incident where having a harness made things worse (doesn't mean it hasn't happened, I just haven't found it in 3 years of looking). The most compelling thoughts I've come across suggest that in a roll-over you get hurt not when the roof hits you, but when you hit the roof because your 3 point won't hold you in upside down. And, in the event the roof is so smashed that a 5 or 6 point causes your head to get squished, you will probably be done for anyway. Just something else to think about  and keep it safe :yesnod:
Kraff is totally correct ... I'd much rather have on a high quality SA rated (Snell) helmet with a 5/6 point harness system, than have my head exposed in the 3 point system in ANY type of accident.
I like the Brey-Krause harness bar and belt mounting system ... take a look at: http://www.bkauto.com/
in the Corvette section ... also look at the fire extinguisher mount (Some groups/tracks at least recommend, if not require, a fire extinguisher) and there is also a camera mount for the harness bar if you want to tape yourself for later analysis.
I also concur. I do Watkins Glen, Pocono, and sometimes Lime Rock. You definitely need a Snell rated helmet and harness with or without the sub feature. The submarine feature is a matter of personal preference. Also Nomex.
Yes a roll cage would be additional insurance but after five years of doing these events have not, knock on wood, found it necessary unless running a convertible.
Looking forward to the Glen August 18-19 with the new car.

Re: 5 Point Racing Harness (barondw)
Barondw,
We ofern install the B-K harness bar & Lap belt mounts to nearly all of our customers doing track days. You won't believe how much better you can drive when you are held in the seat by the belts, instead of hanging onto the wheel. We are in production on our own harness bar mount that looks very much like a roll bar (but our attourney won't let us call it one ;) ). The B-K bar goes for just under $400 and the clip-in lap belt mounts are $139 (for both seats).
As far as belts, we are very happy with the quality and service of CROW. If you arerelatively tall in the torso, we recommend the use of a velcrow sternum closure. The reason for this closure is that the Z06 seats tend to hold the shoulder harnesses apart, limiting the effectivity of the shoulder straps, especially for someone that is not real broad in the shoulders.
We are a supporting vendor and can get this stuff out to you quickly.

PS. IMO Go with 6 point harness, not 5 for better security and for beter placement of impact energy.
