Anyone else have a second failure? I have an 02 Z06. First time at 11500 miles the fuel pump/ sending unit was replaced. Now at 19000 gauge reading died again. Called up my service guy at the dealer and he said they are waiting for a software fix. GM is not replacing fuel pump sending units anymore. I have to wait two months for the software mod. In the mean time I have to reset the codes. It works fine after the reset.
Service guy said the fuel pump sends a fault to the @#$% computer and the computer freaks. Software will fix the problem. Sounds like they found a fix for the 04's.
Another question - anyone lost their gauge reading in rainy driving conditions?
I had a Nissan truck that did it 4 times! After their failure to find a cure Nissan bought the truck back under the lemon law. This seems to be a common problem among newer cars.
I thought I read something about the newer fuels being the problem.
I know this sounds crazy but. I had this problem occur several times only after topping the tank completely off as full as I could get it. I now stop after the pump clicks the first time and have not had the problem with the haywire gauge in about two years until the other day when I topped it off again and the same thing happened. May not be the same problem in yours but it is worth a try.
The fuel pump/sending unit mounts inside the tank with the pump at the bottom.
This helps cool the pump, so constantly low fuel levels will decrease the life of the pump.
The sending unit is exposed to the fuel and can corrode like any bare metal.
Fuel contains additives the 'gum up' the sender metal.
It sits high up in the fuel and is exposed to air at about 3/4 tank level.
I just did my Silverado fuel assembly (showed empty on gage), and it's very similar to the C5/Z06.
I replaced the part with a new pump/sender just to get a new pump (85,000 miles).
I cleaned the old sender contacts with a fiberglass contact brush and it starting working without a glitch.
If I lose fuel level in the Z06, I plan on pulling the assembly and cleaning the wiper and contacts.
I had this problem for the first time about 1 month ago on my 01 with 22,000 miles. The gage "stuck" at about 5/8 full for about 1/3 of a tank. After I filled up again, it worked fine. I hope this is not a bad omen that it will fail just after my warranty runs out in October! That would be just my luck.
