It is all over the forum that folks use Mobil 1 quite a bit. What doesn't seem to get said is what weight they are using. Because a lot of folks say they are buying it at Walmart in the 5 quart jugs for $18.88, I would assume they are using the 10W-30 version.
Mobil seems to indicate that they recommend using the 15W-50 in performance cars and that it is formulated for supercharged/turbo equipped vehicles because of the extra heat generated.
I live in Texas and a lot of people here use 10W-40 because of the fact that it's hot and stays that way for extended periods. The 40W tends to remain a consistency slighty above water in the heat as compares to 30W. :-)
Maybe I should posted this on the forced induction board, but he**, I drive a Z06, just happens it will be done supercharging this Saturday at 21st CMC.
Any input/ideas on using Mobil 1 15W-50? By the way, it doesn't seem to come in the 5 quart jugs, just bottles. Hard for me to write bottles, I grew up with cans. :-) Thanks!!
Walmart also carries the 5W Mobil 1 in the 5qt containers. I put 15w50 in my ZX12 motorcycle, but won't in the car. Factory knows best on this, and if they want oil the consistency of water in the Z06, that is what I am going to put in. 10w30 is probably okay for the hotter climates, however 15w50 is overkill and will kill some of your horsepower. If you have not had the chance to look at this oil, buy a quart. It looks like motor honey... It was great on the motorcycle, but of course, the motorcycle generated more heat than a car, and revved to 12K-13K very quickly and easily. The thicker oil would thin out but still stick to all the components well enough at these higher RPMs, and also helped the clutch better than the thinner oil. The Z06 is a different beast and probably should not run a 15w50 type oil. Just my opinion, given I have had vehicles that used a wide variety of oil types.
Of course with your supercharger setup, you might want to contact an engine builder like LPE and see what they run with their supercharged vettes. You obviously will be generating more heat by compressing the intake charge, but I am not sure if the heavier oil would be warranted. I would maybe consider the 10w in your case.

Thanks for the reply. There is so much BS out there, sometimes you just don't know which is right. :-)
21st CMC, an authorized LPE dealer, has my car right now and I will be asking John what he recommends. I like learning as much as I can and want to do the right thing. Thanks for the input.
I do not know how a supercharger will change the engine's lubrication needs but this link contains interesting information about oil. Hope it helps http://www.idavette.net/hib/C5diy/c5diy1.htm

The supercharger causes the car to run at a higher temp, thus affecting the oil viscosity and it's life.

This is an excellent article....Halverson has also done a good job on explaining the differences between the 2001-2002 Z06 L-6 engines which is available on the C-5 Registry web site. [IMG][/IMG] :hurray:
Contrary to what many people think, say 10w-40, the oil is the thickness of the 10 weight the oil does not get thicker, there is an additive the molecules in the additive swell up with heat causing a resistance to flow equal to that of 40w. And as far as oil for blown, turbo, etc. synthetic oil withstands heat better due to the fact of its man made properties. I was actually told by a chevron oil technician, that i should use 10w 30 he said that the 10w 40 has to much of the additive i mentioned. being i live in sunny california and i garage my Z like everyone else does, i dont really worry about my oil getting cold and causing a lubrication problem at start up. I use 10w 30, mobil 1 of course.
