in addition to the stingers i installed this weekend i also put in a hurst and took out the ripper that i had in there for a month or so. all in all i can't say i feel that much difference. it is somewhat easier to row thru the gears-- but still feels very substantial and precise. after using the ripper it felt weird when i first drove it with the hurst, but i'm getting used to it now and i think i like it better.... we'll see. getting it into reverse isn't much different though-- still takes some effort.
all in all i wouldn't hesitate to recommend either. they are very similar in their length of throw and overall feel, but the hurst definitely takes less effort to manipulate.... whether or not i'll prefer that to the ripper remains to be seen
i should mention that i didn't mess with any of the spring tension stuff on the hurst-- took it out of the box-- put grease on the ball and bolted it in....
also the hurst seems quieter than the ripper-- under heavy acceleration the ripper would rattle a bit-- the hurst does the same, but it's not as loud and the pitch is different-- seems lower and so you notice it less.

Big Law Man:
Replace your OEM **** with an MGW **** and the Hurst will have ZERO rattles.

Works on some, not on others. The tennis ball trick is another good one.
Re: replaced ripper with hurst: thoughts (ppk1911)
Threaded my Ripper down some and buried my hardbar **** till the top of the stick hit the inside top of the ****, really short, tight. Have had it this way for about a year now fell hasn't changed, hasn't loosened up. For me it is perfect. :flag

Re: replaced ripper with hurst: thoughts (BIG LAW MAN)
I have never heard of a Hurst rattling with a MGW **** on it. Its gotta be pretty rare!
I HAD a Hurst with an MGW ****....the rattling was unbearable. I junked it for a Breathless shifter with the same MGW ****...much better quality, feel, an NO rattling. :yesnod:
i wouldn't-- different creature entirely. the hurst is most like the ripper, but somewhat easier to manipulate. with the mallett you don't get any reduction in throw length over the stock shifter-- at least it doesn't feel like it's any shorter to me. also mine had the diamond **** and it was just low enough that with my arm resting on the console (in my usual shifting position) the ridge on the **** was just even with my palm and it was uncomfortable. for me to grab it lower to avoid the ridge meant moving my arm to an unnatural position. i think i would have liked it more if i had the round top instead of the diamond.
i just took the hurst back out this weekend and put the ripper back in because i kept notching my 2nd to 3rd gear shift with the hurst. i think i prefer the extra effort the ripper requires and think i'm going to keep it. watch for my other 2 shifters to be put up in the for sale section shortly.
Re: replaced ripper with hurst: thoughts (ppk1911)
If I were you I would give the Mallett another try... with another ****! These are your options: Mallett's teardrop (round) **** or a Delrin **** from Hardbar.
Now you can choose between three different Delrin *****: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=613828
You can order from Hardbar, LGM and possibly LAPD . Make sure you order a Mallett version!
:seeya
thanks CR for the input! i didn't know hardbar was making new *****! i'm gonna order a new longer version for my ripper and maybe i'll get on for the mallett too.
btw i called malletts and asked if i could buy a new **** for mine and they said NO-- gotta buy another complete shifter! :(
