Shifter **** install question!
I got the aluminum/leather shifter **** w/ the c5 emblem on it. I got the stock shifter off in 1 minute. The shifter comes w/ some plastic bushings, of which only 1 slides over the shifter stem. I put that into the new shifter ****,put the gear **** cap on the shifter stem (came w/ the ****). Fits but the hifter **** just spins around now. No place to replace the locking pin to prevent this! Any one have a solution? I called Autotechnica but the reps are having a voice mail-a-thon! Help! Thanks

Did you try putting the stock metal wedge back in with the new shifter ****?

With the new ****, you can't remove the top of it to replace the pin. Also, the plastic bushing it comes with doesn't have a hole in the top of it. I was thinking to try to drill a hole in it,then replace the pin, then screw the **** down. If not, I'm sending it back! :lurk:
You said "it just spins around". I assume you mean you can screw it down tight, but it won't be straight. Is that right?
If so, you might try putting a little piece of rubber on top of the shaft, and screw it down and see if you can just make different thickness shims until it screws down tight pointed the right direction. At the same time, a bunch of teflon tape on the treads will help keep it from coming loose.

Re: Shifter **** install question! (jschindler)
The plastic bushing that fits is too big for the shifter shaft. So, I put it on the shaft but it's so loose that when I screw on the new **** to the bushing, the 2 spin around the shaft.
I have the same type shifter **** in my car. The **** came with around 6 different sized plasic 'bushings" as you called them. Is that how yours came?
I just kept trying each one til I found the one that was the closest fit and screwed it on. It sounds like the bushing you have is too big.
The **** I have is manufactured by Autotechnical. If your is also from this manuf. it should have come with a bunch of different sized bushings. You have to select the next smaller bushing. I had to screw mine down quit a bit to get a tight fit. IM if you need further assistance.
Yes-Autotechnical is where it came from. The next size bushing I think is too small, although I didn't try to force it on.Did you have to force yours on?? Thanks!
If I remember correctly the one I used slid on about half way then I started screwing it down from there. It did take quite a few turns to get it snug and over a period of a couple weeks, I turned it down about two more full turns to keep it snug so it didn't spin when I was shifting aggressively.
Ok, this might help you too. It appears that the **** came with 7 bushings. Each is stamped on the end with a number. The six I DID NOT USE are numbers: 16, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8. I would assume the one I used is probably #14. Compare these numbers to yours and let me know what you find out.
Hey Doc,
Buy some removable Loctite thread locker. This will basically glue it in place, but you will still be able to remove it when needed. Good luck.
...It's a bastard isn't it?!
Same drama with my C4 and a mates...damned if we ever saw a 'bushing' come loose! Seems they didn't 'fix' it with the later models either!
I agree with another member; glue the damned thing on, or use silicon etc.
(I hate to say it but 'other' brands of (Obviously inferior) vehicles actually use a threaded gearstick ****!
At the end of the day tho; I guess it's no HUGE drama (Not compared to other skill-base learning curbs of 'vette's as I'm finding out (Constantly!)
Just a FYI on that shifter ****. I had that exact same one and about two weeks after I had it, it started to tarnish. I got it from Ecklers and they said I could bring it in and they would replace it. They said that was the second time that they had one do this. I have the carbon fiber one now. Not sure how to fix your problem with it not being tightened. I didnt have that problem.
Mine came with a small nylon ball that you put in the **** b4 you screw it on the shifter,it compresses to keep the **** tight, plus I used a small amount of loc-tite. Good Luck

Eckler's told me I was the first one to have this problem with the **** when I took mine back after about a month when the aluminum turned yellow. I thought maybe I had some kind of corosive sweat that just ate through the aluminum finish but, now I think it may be a quality issue since others have had the same problem. I did replace it with the same one but, that one the aluminum piece fell off after a hard 2nd gear shift. Took it back again and got the carbon fiber model and now all is good.
I tried to force on the bushing that's smaller-impossible! I tried to drill a hole in the one that;s too big & it split in 1/2. May just return it though after seeong the tarnish issue. Anyone know how toshorten the stock shifter?

Re: Shifter **** install question!
I have this same ****, but I've got a shortened stock shifter (no threads) so my install was a little different, but it might still help you. I found the bushing that fit the best and then put a little dab of superglue on top of the shifter and then placed the bushing on it. It stays great, but I'm sure if I really needed to I could break it loose. Also, put a lock washer on top of the bushing and then install the ****. This will allow you to line up the **** in the proper direction but still keep it from moving while shifting. You do have to watch out for the emblem coming off, the one I bought was actually a blemished unit that I got at the 50th celebration for $20 because the emblem was starting to come off. I took it and finished removing the emblem so now all i have the is the slightly recessed area in the shape of the emblem. Looks fine to me and cost a lot less. :D
I got the same ****, had the same problems. I ended up tapping and threading the smallest plastic piece they gave me to make a perfectly threaded match - it still spun. I didn't want to glue mine on, so I trashed it and bought a delron shift **** that is made to thread on with no inserts.
