2020 Corvette of the Year Finalist (performance mods)
C4 of Year Winner (performance mods) 2019
Am I crazy????
Here's the deal, I got rid of my 92 and bought the Z back in the beginning of the year. While I really love the Z, I also really miss the C4. The Z is almost too good. It's relatively quiet, rides very comfortably, is very smooth in it's power delivery and goes fast without seeming too. The C4 on the other hand, really had the feel of an all out sports car. You had to make sacrifices to drive the car, and it really felt like you were part of the car instead of sitting in/on the car. Also, even though it was slower, it really felt like it was going faster (probably partly due to the exhaust). Finally, for some reason, I just like the looks of the C4 a little better, especially when they are lowered to the limit like mine was.
So here's my dilema, should I get rid of the Z and find a C4 that I'll really like, say maybe a ZR1, or should I mod the Z06 to try and get it to have some of the same feel as the C4.

Re: Am I crazy???? (EvanZ06)
Why would you "retro mod" a C5 to be like a C4? The cars are two completely different animals. It sounds to me as if you should just go out and buy a ZR1. :yesnod:
I have often thought the same thing. The C5 is too easy for me to make it very fast and pass smog tests since I only have to pass a OBD2 flash test.
If the ZR1 didn't require a sniffer test, I'd probably be in one now. I think the ZR1 can be vastly stiffened up with the camber brace and under body x brace out now. The Z06 will autox better than the ZR1 though. To each his own both are great cars.

I sold my 95 Admiral Blue 6spd coupe two weeks along and purchased a EB 2002 Z06. I think the Z06 is lightyears ahead of my C4. The only thing I really miss about my C4 was the color (Admiral Blue) I have headers and a borla exhaust on my C4 that really sounded great and turned a lot of heads. the Z06 sounds great at WOT but I agree it is a little too quiet. I would stick with the Z06 and add some mods such as headers and a cat back exhaust. Then you'll have a real fast car that sounds great.
If you get stiffer shocks you can get that bone rattling jolt that the C4 gave you when you drove over curves. My first vette was also a C4. It felt like a fast car and had an agressive rumble to it but I like the refinments of the Z06.
To me the I thought the C4 fealt more bulky. I fealt like I was in a huge car everytime I drove it. I like the looks of the C4 about the same as the Z. I had a black on black 90 convertible with chrome ZR-1 Wheels. I admit it looked sharp.
The only thing I miss about that car over the C5's is the sound system and I miss the clamshell style hood but thats about it. I get the same reaction with my 90 that I get with the Z from other drivers. Non-Vette people always thought my 90 was a new car. One thing I admit is I think the flat trunk lines of the C4 convertible with the small factory spoiler look sharper than the the C5 vert. Although I would rather take a C5 coupe over any C4 coupe. To me the best C4 was a 90 convertible because it was the first year with the new dash (hated the Boing 767 cockpit of the earlier C4's) but, it reatained the earlier rearend without the TV screen looking taillights and rounded butt of the ZR-1.
Try stiffer shocks and a more aggressive exhaust like the Corsa indy or Borla Stingers. That might give you some of the feal of the older C5

Put a set of stingers or Corsa on your Z and you will have all the sound that one would need - especially at WOT.. I can't believe that you think your C4 felt faster than the LS6 car - that is really crazy!
Evan, Evan, Evan .... You REALLY still miss your F-Body don't you :)
OK, in answer to your question you are not crazy but you are in a definite minority. I say upgrade the exhaust, put in a Ripper, get some mods done to make even MORE power and enjoy the Z.
I'd say not to give up on your new Z06, which is clearly a superior overall performance car...plus you're likely to lose a good amount of market value by jumping ship now since you've taken a depreciation hit already. Add a nice aftermarket intake and exhaust and change the stock seats out to some nice aftermarket ones, and I bet you will have nearly all the elements back that you are missing.
It is a little hard to imagine exactly what you are missing from your description. I'd suggest you put together a list of the attributes you want in a car and then compare. Ex. Want to feel bumps in the road, want loud exhaust, want lots of power, etc. Compare your list to each car and make your decision. ;)
Evan, the answer to your question is ALL People ARE CRAZY(in some ones opinion) always been that way, probably alway's will be. Do what ever makes you happyer. Some people try to tell all of us, what's best for us. But thank goodness we still have some of our liberty. Enjoy your choice, it's you that will live with it, and you pay for it, in america that's still allowed. Good luck with the right choice for you. Ric
I understand how you feel. Before the Z, I had two LS1 powered F-bodies. All you had to do to them to make them violent and lashy was 4.10's and Longtubes...... The point is, that the Z IS faster, without feeling violent, or uncontrollable.... This is a good thing in fact, because that means you have a car tha is already much faster and is much more WELL BALANCED. With a 3.90 gear swap, you will be able to feel that torque multiply faster, and will give you the same feel, while owning a new, or current american icon. Nothing against ZR-1's they are great cars, and if you can live with the styling, guages, looks, etc. of an out of date car, then its your choice, but I would advise against it, because you will be selling a better, meaner car (with precision instead of rawness, and kidney beating bump capabilities) losing money on the Z (buyers market) and be buying an older (read in: depreciation) car.
I know what you mean. The C5 is a completely different feel than the C4. For me it has taken some getting used to. I like my '03 Z06 more and more every day. I would be completely happy if I could get rid of the 'sitting on the car' feeling and get the 'sitting in the car' feeling.
:withstupid: I still like driving my '93 .. it's a great car. The shorter wheelbase gives it a 'smaller car' feel, even though overall length is roughtly the same. Still, the Z06 can outperform it in every way, while being quieter and more comfortable at the same time.
