I thought I remembered some people saying that there brakes squeeked. Is this something that a lot of vettes have? I am about ready to get new rotors or pads because it drives me nuts. :banghead:
People should notice the car because it looks great or sounds great not because it squeeks every time I roll up to a red light.
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (WisconsinVETTE)
I've had no squealing in 11K miles of driving my 03. However, I often make bigtime/high-speed/full ABS mode stops, and this "cleansing" may be why I have no problems. Maybe. I don't know for sure, just a suggestion.
Just last light I did a 140-to-30 "shoulder belt stretcher", and then cruised for few miles to make sure things cooled down evenly. Man, these brakes work good!!
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (WisconsinVETTE)
My point is that the z06 was designed to please people who want ultimate track and autocross performance, not to please people who like quite soft cars. It just so happens that in this universe, nobody knows how to make a brake pad that performs really well AND doesn't make any noise.
Anyway your problem is easily solved with a set of non-z06 corvette pads.
Show car or performance car?
I dont care if I am driving a pinto to the junk yard, squeeling brakes are gonna drive me nuts.
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (WisconsinVETTE)
My 4 week old 03's breaks do squeek. Nothing too bad at the moment, but still a little annoying. I'll live with it until it gets too bad or the pads need to be replaced. Probably won't replace with the stock pads though.
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (WisconsinVETTE)
I've got about 3500 miles on my car. These brakes squeal like like a bunch of pigs. I was told this is normal for high performance brakes. It is a little embarrasing squeeking up to a light. Hammer down when it goes green(no more embarrasement!)
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (Go Low)
C'mon, guys!! If your brakes are squealing, do a few high speed stops like several of us have suggested, see if it solves the problem, and report back to this thread.
Make sure you do a good cool-down drive after hammering the brakes.
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (Go Low)
6K, no squeaks. 3 road course weekends however, as stated, I think this keeps them quiet. I had a set of Hawk streets on my coupe, squeaked for awhile and one day at the track quieted them down. A couple of hard stops followed by some cooling should do the trick.

I'm going out now to give this a try. I'll report back later tonight. :steering:
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (Greg H)
Did four "panic" stops from 90+ with about 15 miles of 65-70mph driving after each stop to cool things down.
Then drove around the neighborhood, stopping and starting from various speeds. Absolutely no squeaks right now. Will check in the morning to see if squeaks come back when the brakes cool.
If they do, I guess I just need to make a few high speed runs and stops each time I drive the Z to "clean off the pads"... :D
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (Greg H)
Way to go, Greg H. I hope they stay quiet for a while.
It does seem that those of us who go into "maximum deceleration mode" on a regular basis don't have the squeals [except squeals of fear from our passengers who have NO IDEA what it feels like to go from 150 to 30 in a calm, controlled, violent manner!].
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (Jerry Velders)
Jerry is probably right, but one man's aggressive braking is another man's panic stop. However, because we have this wonderful ABS system, nobody should be afraid to simply hammer the brakes from highway speeds down to near zero every now and then.
Re: Is brake squeek a problem for corvettes (WisconsinVETTE)
You have either glazed the rotors or accumulated enough dust to make it squeak. The latter is unlikely since most of us like to keep our cars clean ;) So, most likely you have glazed the rotors. Nothing like heavy braking that will wipe out the glazing (from donuts too :D ). A single run at your local autox will take care of the problem.
Remember, if you don't have scores on your rotors, you don't drive the car fast enough ;)
