Hey guys,
Just wondering what your coolant temps normally run. I just bought an '03 and it has about 800 miles on it.
It consistently runs 190deg while cruizing above 40 mph (+/- 5deg), but during stop and go traffic it varies between 215-235 deg. Is this normal?
Sometimes the car feels much stronger than others when you roll into it. I am wondering if this is coming from operating temps, or if the computer is still breaking in and not quite ready to let her rip??
That is pretty normal with stock thermostat and fan settings. Many of us have gone with lower stats and fans that come on sooner. My car runs 180 degree's in any driving, but I have modified as described.
Since the car is now "broken-in" it is time to get some spirited driving done, you will find that it hits stride after 2K miles or so. In this heat you will get a lot of SOTP variation depending on temp and hmidity, more so than coolant temps.

Thanks les, that is what I wanted to know. These fan settings sure do suck, the temp guage never moved on my T/A.
It is strange, but I think the cpu does not fully let these car go for a couple of thousand miles. My Butt-o-Meter has become pretty sensitive over the years and you can tell that sometimes the car is stronger than others.
My 03 has a 160 and Hypertech computer upgrade. Fan 1 at 184 and off at 175. Fan 2 comes on at 194 and off at 185. I checked coming home from work today in 83 degree weather. After 15 minutes water was 167 and oil was 185. When you punch it the temps go up some. The Hypertech unit is about $350. The power tune works but the best change was setting the rev limiter at 7100. I have not been on the limiter since I reset it. I was on it all the time before. Everything just seems smoother to me and yes, there is nore HP.
The hottest my 2001 Z06 has ever gotten was 260 degrees F. It was 104 degrees f , ambient, when I started up the long steep grade to Dante's Look out in Death Valley CA . the AC was on and I had my wife as passenger.
My car used to run hot too. I think it's supposed to run that hot because of the emissions equipment. I installed a 178º T-stat and had my fans adjusted when I had my car edited and now I consistently run in the mid 180's to mid 190's depending on traffic and how hot the day is here in the Chicago area.

Corvette Quaterly has an interesting article in the summer 2003 issue called "Camel Mode". In the article, Mark Allen, a GM calibration engineer explains the C5's subroutine that keeps the car running after all of the coolant is gone by shutting down cylinders one at a time until only four are firing and then those four alternate so that a balance is maintained. The engine becomes an air cooled four banger. It's pretty ingenious. Anyway, Mark Allen says 200-210 is normal. The first "Engine Hot" warning comes on at 265 degrees F. He says the upper limit on the oil temp is 320 F.
I've seen 260 coolant at the track and 300 oil a couple of times but no warnings. I usually back off and it cools down quickly. I wouldn't worry about an occasional 220 to 230 coolant temp. Periodically check your coolant level in case it boils over a little a dumps some out. :chevy

Thanks for the info Gregg.
Am I the only one that thinks this is unacceptable for a "Race-Bred" car? I know that GM is hamstringed a little because of emissions but seeing 260 deg. is rediculous, I dont care what kind of driving conditions you are putting it through. I might invest in some tuning and a thermostat afterall.
