Had my Z for 3 summers now, and have 15000 miles on it...Also ATI blower since 6000 miles....It is weird, the car used oil about 1 quart every 1500 miles until this summer..I thought i had a marginal oil burner..Changed the oil in April drove 3200 miles and it was 2/3 quart low...Go figure  :yesnod:

If your car is only 2/3's of a quart low after 3200 miles, I'd say you have a very good motor. I changed my oil after the first 700 miles and it was a quart low 800 miles later!..Now I had a 2000 coupe that did the same thing the first 2000 miles so biggie but If you drive your car hard AND regularly take it to the track like I do, you're pulling out your dip stick once a month...at least! :D
I know that dealer mechanics are usually full of crap. But one guy by me who is a special vette tech (been working on them for 30 years) said that with the synthetic oil the rings can take a very very long time to seat. Maybe yours finally have

I got the same info from my Vette mechanic who has been working with them a long time, and is the best Vette mechanic in Oklhoma. He said that the issue with the oil consumption on the LS1/6 motors is that it takes the rings over 20,000 miles to properly break in. I'm not sure if I really buy into that, but I have noticed that mine has gone from about 1 qt every 600-700 miles to 1 qt every 1100 miles. I just finished the oil consumption test, and have the rering scheduled for the end of October (after my last track day), but I may see about just waiting until Feb or April of next year to see if the oil consumption continues to drop. Mel (my mechanic) is concerned that the repalcement rings with the aggressive scraper design may cause accelerated wear on the cylinder liners as you get more mileage on the engine (100K or so). Anyway, if the oil consumption continues to drop as my mileage increases, I really don't see that it's worth going into the engine to replace the rings. I've got until next May (only at 22K miles now) on the factory warranty, so I've still got plenty of time to test his theory.
Good point Evan. I remember when the LS6 first was intoduced a few years ago. It touted new technology such as " low drag " piston rings. I guess that after all this suppsoed new feature mioght be the actual problem with the cars burnign oil. My car eats its fair share of oil. But ya know? I never ever see it smoke? How is this possible? I think the motor might be absorbing it!

Good to hear another vette expert saying the same thing. I have until February and might give it time to see if it decreases. I don't see smoke with mine either!

I don't think any of the oil consuming LS1/6 motors actually produce any smoke. What you will see is a black buildup inside the exhaust tips and on the rear of the car (small black specks). Those folks that have gone from 01 Z06s to 02+, or have had the rering state that they don't have this issue.
Every Car I've owned so far(only 2). My 300hp at the front wheels  supercharged GTP used a quart every 1000 miles. My 2002 Z06 has around 6200 miles on it now and i've added around 1 1/2 quarts to it no bigge I though it was normal in performance cars.
Doesn't the car burn oil natrually like when it blows past the rings on hard downshifts and high rpm low throttle position situations.
I waited for 25,000 miles for my rings to "break in"! Well they never did, so I got the re-ring. Funny thing is, the new rings broke in immediately and I don't burn anyoil now.
So how does that fit with the long break in theory? Also, why is it that 2002 up cars don't have this "break in" problem?
The answer is that the problem is caused by too low tension rings, not by break in time.
