Default Hurst install

I have a Hurst shifter inbound to me. I have installed Rippers in my last two cars so I know how to install. My questions are specific to the Hurst adjustment options. If I want the short throws but not the really hard shifts I assume I go with the softer springs. Correct? I've also seen comments on "don't mess with the stops - don't need them. True? What I really want to do is take everything possible into account before I install it so I don't have to mess with it once it's in and all the interior components are back in place. If I want to make adjustments after the install do I have to take the console all apart again? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Correct. The springs are there to stiffen or lighten lateral movement of the shifter. Especially from center to 6th/reverse.

True. I don't think you really need them, but I adjusted them. I figured they put them there for a reason.

What I really want to do is take everything possible into account before I install it so I don't have to mess with it once it's in and all the interior components are back in place. You don't have to take everything apart. I did this: Before putting on all of the trim pieces, put the shifter **** back on. Now you can adjust the settings to your liking as if your really driving. Then take the **** back off and put the pieces back on. Double check your 6th/reverse before you finish. You don't want everything back on and have to loosen the screws.

One last note, if you change the screws, make sure you use the screw lock gel that Hursts gives you. You don't want thaat screw rattling loose.

Anymore help needed, just ask.

Changing the springs won't change how hard the shifts are, it will only change the lateral force (side to side movement), of the shifter. The springs are there only for self centering purposes of the shifter rod.

Great tips, pk2401 - thanks! Oh, and when I said hard shifts I meant the lateral force. Should have clarified! Cant' wait to get it in and get rid of the stock setup! :yesnod:

One last tip for you. If you decide to switch the springs, make sure to put a small towel around the base of the shifter. If you're not careful those things fly off like rockets. I forgot to put a towel so then when I removed a screw it flew out and fell thru the cracks. Took me about an hour to find the damn thing. :banghead:

Most important tip.....

The stock rubber boot doesn't fit tight around the shaft of the Hurst shifter like it does on the stock shifter. The directions tell you to invert the stock rubber boot. You will hear more noise coming up from the trans tunnel than what you heard with your stock shifter.

If the increase in noise is okay with you....you are set to go.

If you want a much quiter ride go to Home Depot or other hardware store. In the PVC pipe isle look for a black rubber 1.5" cap with a band clamp on it. You need one of these. Remove the band clamp and discard it. Drill a hole about 5/8" in the center of this cap. Slide the cap down the shaft (it really doesn't matter which direction you install this cap...use your own judgement as to what you like. The cap should fit just inside the stock rubber boot to provide a tight fit and much QUIETER ride.

I did this a few weeks after my install and the difference was night and day. The rubber cap does not affect the movement of the shifter and doesn't show under the leather boot.

Enjoy...

I'm definitely going to install it with the rubber cap. It looks like a quick and cheap way to insure it's quiet from the get-go! I think I might put the softer springs in it when I install it since I tend to like the lateral movement a bit easier than some. I imagine that with the stiffer springs it's alot like a Ripper and I want to try it with the softer feel. Thanks for everyone's replies!
