Default Need help deciding

For the past month or so, I've been saving to get some Long Tube headers. But with all of the Borla Stingers threads going around on the forum I really can't decide which to get now. So if you had to choose which would it be, LT headers or Stingers. Input to your answers will be greatly appreciated.
If it helps any, I don't have any heads/cam upgrades, and never really plan on it, well atleast until my warranty is up.

I'd buy Stingers today, because some members here whom I trust are using teh Borla

I've read that the long tubes can create a need for programming and/or head mods, which is awholenother story :yesnod:

Id definately go with the long tubes. The stingers dont flow all that much better than the stock titanium exhaust, so you're going to pick up more power with the headers and having heard the stingers on my old car without headers and having heard a 2002 Z06 with long tubes and the stock exhaust, I liked the sound of the headers with the stock exhaust better. Not much louder than stock, but much deeper and more powerful sounding. Its all personal preference, but Id definately go for the power before the sound. Just my .02 Good luck

I have the Stingers and the next mod is Long Tube headers (either LG's or MTI's). Do the Headers for the SOTP gains and the Stinger for the sound.

My call....DO BOTH!

I am just waiting to hear the set up on another Z before making the call...I know I'll like the WOT sound out the back...just want to make sure I still have a reasonable cruising sound in the cabin. I think the sound of the Borla at any throttle position is great!

LT's all the way. They will make more power (the Boarla's make great sound but little or no additional power). Down the road if you get a H&C package you will be PLENTY loud with stock exhaust.

Just my .02.

:iagree: Your not going to gain much from a cat back (a few hp), but you will from headers ( I got 17 rwhp and 27 rwtq). I still have my stock exhaust with headers and I gain a great sound a WOT and a slight more agressive sound at idle. The tone is perfect for me. Go to a car show and see if you can find a vette with some LT and or Borla's and listen for yourself.

Hi pk2401 -

The only reason to replace your stock titanium units to the Borla's (or virtually any other cat back besides straight pipes) is to change the sound.

I considered the Borla's - In my estimation they are probably about the same weight and I don't think they add any HP. Not a compelling way to spend the money in my opinion.

I have also considered headers - long tube of course. I think that headers are a true performance enhancing mod, especially when used in conjunction with other complimetary mods, such as a free flowing cold air intake setup.

Of primary importance to me with a header setup would be the details - all of the air conditioner / power steering / brake hoses properly shielded etc. - you can have some problems working the bugs out of a header install as some freinds of mine have experienced.

I am not aware of your current mods, but my sig lists some mods I found to provide good performance gains. I highly recommend a computer custom-tune by your choice of the competent CF Sponsored vendor tuners.

good luck!

best regards -

Hey mqqn,

Thanks for all the great input. How much performance gain did you experience with the LS1 edit. Thanks.

I'm undecided, but I know I would rather have the B&B PRTs than the stingers. B&B has a new muffler out with NO resonance that will start shipping Oct. 3rd so I'm waiting to see pics and hear a review.

LTs - best out there are LG Motorsports IMHO $1995
Mufflers - B&B $700 but COULD sell Ti system for $450 (net $250)

Tough decision....
But I'm thinking if I put on the PRTs and then later went with LTs, the PRTs would probably have to come off because it would be too loud for me.

So, for me...LTs are the most sensible first choice and go from there based on how loud it is and how loud I want to go..

Hi pk2401 -

I had my baseline dyno done on one dyno (a DynoJet) and then the post-edit measure was taken on a Mustange Dynow (the Breathless portable) so the two numbers MAY have some variance between the two - but before the tune I was at 356RWHP and after it was at 372!

And I did feel SOTP increase after the tune - and of course the car runs cooler now.

There are many tuners out there - I chose Ernie from a freind's recommendation while at the last forum Cruise In.

good luck and Best Regards -

mqqn

Both!! :yesnod: Some say that the Stingers give no HP, are only sound, and a waste of money. Some have gotten 7-10 HP from stingers, but I didn't get them for HP. I'm driving a super fast sportscar and wanted it to sound mean. I had a DOCH Cobra with Flowmasters for five years, so the Z's stock setup sounded pathetic in comparison. Now it sounds great. I'm saving up for some LGM headers and an LS1 edit.
